I just received some hibiscus seeds from a trade. The ziploc package was full of these little beetle type bugs. Any idea what type of bug they are? I noticed that some of the seeds were hollow, looked like little cups, so I am guessing the bugs were inside the seeds. Anyone else come across this?
I have since thrown out the seeds, wasn't going to even open the package.
Beetle bugs in with seeds
They are probably just long nose weevils. They like to hide in the hibiscus seeds. There is no way really to know they are there until they decide to come out. The easiest cure/precaution I know, is to put them in the freezer a couple of months. It kills the critters. It's a shame you tossed them because you probably still had viable seeds if you can get past having freeze dried bugs. LOL
Maybe I will try that! Now I have to go garbage digging.
Thanks for the info Badseed! Appreciate it
LOL I don't know what you had traded for or if you need more, but I have some seeds in the freezer from fall. You are welcome to them if you want some. I plan to start some myself.
