This poor vine was in full bloom before the last windy cold spell and it lost a lot of leaves. There is a possibility of temps falling to the mid 30's tonight with hard wind. Should I toss a blanket over the vine? It's growing on an arbor over my gate and is fully exposed to the wind.
I'm thinking I need to take cuttings today, but hate to chop off the new growth because I wanted it to flower some more.
I hate these one day cold spells, they do so much damage in a short time. I've taken cuttings from my coleus and will cover the ones in the ground with straw.
X decaisneana passiflora, should I cover tonight?
Susie it certainly wouldn't hurt to throw a blanket over it. Wind makes no difference. Plants aren't affected by wind chill factor. Just actual temps.
Thanks Donna, I wondered if the wind chill made any difference. I know the wind sometimes burns the edges of the brug leaves, but they're tender anyway. I need to get out there now and throw the blanket over the vine before it gets dark. I think I'll staple it to the fence(the blanket, not the vine).
As you remember, I've only lived in this house since June so all my plants are very new and more tender so I've got the more tender ones covered. You ought to see my yard with the coverings I used.......2 big empty trash cans, a large cardboard box, towels, blankets...very tacky looking tonight! LOL. But we're supposed to have 2 nights of these low temps. I'm in the panhandle on the coast. I hate this cold.....wonder how many more weeks till we can really feel safe that the low temps are gone, gone, gone.
Barb you have been very fortunate in your first year here. We have had a very mild winter this year. I gave up trying to cover plants a long time ago but this late in the season and just getting really cold I would give it a shot. Good Luck
