I went to Schumacher's last Sat because they announced a propagation class. I didn't find out about it until 9 am Sat morning, so I wasn't sure I should try and go since I live in Fredericksburg (l1/2 hours away). But I went anyway and had sooooo much fun.
Being late was not a problem. Frostweed, I planted all those seeds you gave me at the RU in Kerrville. After Chip helps you plant everything (they provided the dirt and pots), you put all your stuff under their misting system. After that I helped propagate some creeping violets. He said to come back in 2 weeks or sooner if we want. When the time comes he will help with transplanting. If I didn't have to work for a living I would be there everyday. Oh, Maggiemoo I also stuck a Madame Alfred cutting for you, and also some sweet olive cuttings for whoever. This will be really excitiing if I can take these to the A&M RU.
If anybody else is interested in doing this just call Schumachers (also called Hill Country Gardens I think) and tell them you want to be on Chip's email list. Or you can go to their website. He can't plan things ahead of time because he has Parkinsons and never knows whether he'll be able to work until he gets up in the morning. But he knows so much about propagation and he wants to share his knowledge. It's just a really exciting thing to do.

propagation at Schumacher's
How wonderful that you did that, I hope all your plants come up and do great.
Josephine.
Hi, Josephine. I just hope they are big enough to take to the RU. I knew that I could never get these seeds to germinate at home, so I was really excited that I could plant them at Schumacher's and leave them there in their mist system.

I think they will be big enough, we still have about two and a half months, that should do fine.
I am in search of nursuries in and around Houston. I am coming up from Corpus Christi & looking along Hwy 59 corridor. I know prices are better in smaller towns (El Campo, Wharton, Richmond, etc.) then the big city. I am a Hoya nut & locating a nursury that has a good supply is my big priority. Any suggections would be appreciated.
Gary
Hi Gary! I know lots of Houston folks would love to recommend their favorite places, but they may not be looking in on this thread. Try starting a thread with the title something like "Looking for nurseries in Houston area." We got such a lot of traffic on a similar thread for San Antonio last year that a bunch of us got together for the first "Nursery Date" ever.
:-)
Frostweed, I finally made it back to Schumacher's to check on my babies and they are doing great! Everyone of the hibiscus came up. I sure hope somebody at the RU needs some. I'm going to leave some at Schumacher's for him to sell or propagate from. The gulf penstemen all came up too. All 2 million of them. He told me to spread all those seeds over 6 4" pots and when I went back yesterday I was really overwhelmed. I was talking to Chip and he said "look over there, you can see your gulf penstemen from here." I looked, and from 30 feet away I could see six 4" pots that were completely green on top. I got up close and realized the dirt was completely covered with thousands of seedlings less than 1/4" tall. WOW He showed me how to transplant them and I filled 4 flats of cells. Probably a hundred cells in each flat. Gulf penstemen anyone?LOL I will leave most of them there, but some will go to the RU. BTW I only used one of the 4 " pots of seedlings. I don't know what they will do with the rest.
