Welcome to Dave's Garden bev_w! You live in my old home town, where I still commute to work every
day :-) What types of unusual annuals do you like to grow? --from Ginny, in Blyth ON

Welcome from the Barrie area! :)
Gee, what a surprise! I was looking around for some other Canadians-- and here you are! I've been dropping in and out of Gardenweb for a few years and I decided to try DG. What an amazing bit of technology this is! I'm quite impressed.
Anyone here into seed trading?
Welcome to Dave's Garden. What are you looking for Bev? I have a pretty full seed bag.
Brenda
Hi Brenda,
Right now I'm looking for Amaranthus Aurora (green with yellow tops). I just realized that I didn't save from last year's plant, and the ones I received on recent trades were the "Intense Purple" variety.
I also like new kinds of annuals and perennials where the germination frustration quotient isn't too high.
Here's my GW trade list: http://members.gardenweb.com/members/exch/bev_w

Lot's of stuff there. You have a couple of sunflowers there I was going to try. I will dmail you. I'm sure i can come up with a few you would like.
I don't know if these qualify as unusual, but in my neighbourhood hardly anyone starts flowers from seed. People just traipse to the (gasp) Sprawl-Mart and buy whatever is cheapest.
Anyway, I've been doing:
- Melampodium (African Zinnia)
- Mignonette (for the scent)
- Garden Balsam (like I say, no one has these around here-- weird...
- Verbena Bonariensis (the bees go nuts over these)
- Lavatera "Silver Cups"
- Orlaya "White Lace"
This year I'm growing some Cucumis Melo (Vine peach) and another variety called "Queen Anne's Pocket Melon" for the scent. Some Wonderberries. Ground Cherries.
I've got some Dictamnus (Gas Plant) on the patio as well as some Curly Head Clematis. Witch Hazel. Ligularia. Kentucky Coffee tree. Lots of other stuff too, but I'd have to check my journal.
Welcome Bev! :)
Welcome Bev..You will enjoy it here. So much to learn, and it's fun to share our gardens and ideas.
My sister lives in London..and she has a wonderful backyard garden.
I enjoy going to garden centres there when I visit.
I'm going to look up mignonette..I'm not familiar with it.
Cheers,
Carol
Bev, welcome!
Is your dictamnus is a container? I bought a good specimen three years ago and planted it in the ground. It barely made it through the winter the first year and didn't come up at all after the second. My mother said hers was never really happy in this climate (we're colder than you) and wasn't all that interesting anyway. Maybe you've had better luck?
Mignonette is on my list, too. I grow it every year for the fragrance. And I'm very fond of the Lavatera Silver Cup.
The dictamnus seeds are "on the patio" in little pots trying to germinate. :-) The seeds have a hard coat that needs stratification. Gas plant is very slow growing, and it really hates to be divided or transplanted, so they're hard to find at garden centres. Hope the seeds work-- I'll let you know
