Starting tropicals indoors

Delaware, OH

I am interested in starting some tropicals to grow indoors on a sunporch. I tried to start a pineapple from a market-bought fruit, but it dried up in the pot. I may have used an inappropriate soil, ie. a synthetic potting mix. Also, I have a mango pit that I dried, opened up slightly, and placed in water. So far, it is quiet. I'm open to any interesting plants that you've started with success.

Avocado - very easy!
I have had good luck growing Madagascar Palm and Plumeria from seed.

Dutchlady1 how do you start your avocados, I had one in water using toothpicks and it split complety open and fell in the water. I have another seed I want to get going but saw this and thought I would ask you how you did it.

The system you described is how I did it. just suspend it above the water with the toothpicks; you can also start it in soil.
We can all have bad luck with growing plants from time to time - I think that is what you had with your avocado. Fortunately it's easy enough to acquire another seed and try again!
