Round Robin seed exchange?

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

I've been eavesdropping on the Fragrant group's round robin. They're sending around a box containing a number of seed packages; each person takes some and adds some and then sends it on to the next. I think it includes both purchased seed and seed collected by individuals.

It got me thinking we might try a similar thing among those of us in this (Canadian) forum. We wouldn't have to worry about cross-border matters, and could benefit from a wide range of seed interest. I've placed two seed orders so far, with two more to go, and I know I'll have way more than I need. And the timing is good for anything to be sown mid-March or later.

Just testing the waters... anyone like to jump in? Has this been done before? Any experiences?

I just received a round robin in the mail yesterday and will be passing it on today. It's a bit late to start one now, takes a couple months to get around so would be well into spring before many got it.

Just my opinion but I'm done for this year. Great idea for next fall though .

Count me in, this spring or this fall.

I'd love to get in on that, but agree that it's most likely too late for this year?

Count me in...

I agree it was too late to try this, however.... I've been looking at the 'Trading' part of DG, which I hadn't explored before. That might be an option.

Here's what I'm going to do. After I've received my seed orders (some have already arrived, three more to come) I'll figure out what I've got left over and post a trading list. Anyone who wants to can view it and contact me. I don't collect seed, but with so many seeds in some of these packages, I'm bound to have leftovers to share.

Does anyone else have a Trading List here on DG?

Andy

Well you probably know I have one. I'm usually up for sharing what I have, even if I can only spare a few seeds to get someone started. My problem is wanting to try far too many.

I went a little bonkers ordering plants this year, and don't have much in the way of seeds ordered and I didn't collect much seed this year- but I would love to get in on a round robin in the fall - would you guys still want to do one then, do you think?

I am willing to share my left overs too! My wish list could seem a little difficult to fulfill for some people, but I am also interested in fragrant flowers, natives that attracts hummingbirds and butterflies, heirloom species; just take a chance!

lets put a note in our collective calendars for sept or oct or so to get this started

I'll keep the exchange in mind over the summer, there's always something going to seed 'round here! LOL

I think that it is a great idea to have a round robin. Count me in next year. I have seeds of my own that I have collected and was blown away when I paid 4 something for datura seeds. Yes it is blackberry twirl which I hope will be nice but I have been looking for yellow datura seeds and can not find them. Anyone with extra yellow datura seed?

You mean, this summer and fall when my DH is saying "You don't have to collect every single seed a plant puts out, dear!" I can say "Yes I do, I need them for the round robin!":)

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

I'm already starting to collect seeds... ones that I'm starting this spring (now) but have too many of. Some packages have a LOT of seed; some are really skimpy.

I'm not sure how germination rates are in a second year, since they vary from one seed/variety to another. I'll also collect seed over the summer and fall.

I've been keeping track of my seeding this year in my DG journal. Apparently you can link the journal with a trade list on DG, which I haven't done yet but will try. Feel free to have a look at my journal to follow my progress and reports on things I'm growing. Comments and help are most welcome!

I for one, wouldn't object to getting second-year seed, it might be interesting to see how it does.
