Encephalartos macrostrobilus

For sale at a So California nursery... this is how my seeling tends to look in winter- yellowy and sad. Then loses its leaves, only to regrow one or two in the spring

The only encephalartos loses it leaves during winter is a poggeii.
No other encephalartos does that.

Attached a picture off a poggeii

Who said anything about this plant losing its leaves in the winter? As a seedling, mine (or what Maurice, the owner of AA cycads sold me as E macrostrobilis) loses is leaves often before new ones grow back.. but as it ages this is happening less and less, and it certainly doesn't seem to be associated with any seasonal variations that I can tell. Many cycads lose their leaves, at least here in California, though I have not noticed a seasonal rhythm with this leaf loss. Of course, in cooler areas, many Encephalartos loose their leaves every singe winter here... but that is because they are literally frozen off. Several of my Encephalartos went through that cycle this last winter when it got down well below freezing for a long time. All survived, fortunately and have leaves again.

a poggei and macstrobilus are basicly from a very warm climate. This plants is from the Congo!

Get yourself a middelburgensis, this plant will stand that freezy cold winters!!

have some already. This plant (macrostrobilis) seems to be doing fine, other than losing its leaves periodically... but as it gets larger, it seems to be doing less and less.
