Welcome to our African violet forum :))
Please check our Stickys they will answer your question and then some !!
Leaves down and getting roots and babies coming up can depend on a lot of factors . Healthy and variety of leaf used. Is soil-less mix light? Are they warm ? Plenty of light ? Humidity? Are they fed ?
They can root sand shoot babies up many different periods of time . 2-8 weeks for roots can take 4-16 weeks for babies and a good 9-12 months for a blooming plant :))
Sand never used it. I don't know why but I think of sand attracting un-welcomed insects ?
I use extremly light soil. 3 parts Perilite.

Cr I also posted the other day.
I have alway made my soil-less mixture light. But still people would lift my pots and say lift their and theirs were lighter. The more I learned from others and saw how much better my plants were growing the lighter my soil-less mix became :))Came across a grow info paper from Fredricks I think from when I got my bargin D&P plants. it said they recomend soil to be as light as possible. This I have learned from many books and many people :))
Here are a few more growing tips.
