Kell ... do you have any experience with growing this banksia in the Bay area? I have a Banksia Ericifolia- Compact in Alameda and am worried it's in decline (after about one year). Has lost many needles, and has no new growth while a Banksia Spinulosa "Schnapper Point", planted right next to it is doing great (plenty of new growth.

They both produced beautiful candles last year. Trying to find what I should do to save the ericifolia.

So sorry. I have none of these but love looking at them. I wonder if they need to be dryer than what we have here. Do you have it in fast draining soil?

Hi Kell .... thanks for your reply. I'm new to the site this year and didn't realize I needed to check for replies (thought they got forwarded to my email).

I have mostly sandy soil with just a bit of amendment in the top few inches. It did great the first year, then started yellowing and dropping needles like crazy. I thought like you did ... maybe too much water... so let it dry out and virtually neglected it since April. Lo and behold, it's doing great!

So, you must've been right ... even for a recently planted specimen, it had too much water. Love the plant...

Thanks again for taking the time to reply.

Well WELCOME then. The site now will post all threads that you have posted on to your homepage if anyone posts to them. Makes it easier to track.

Great your plant is doing better. I think all the Protea like it dry.
