Lotus tubers
Wow....make sure you post your pics all along the way! I've been adding waterlilies and lotus to my small pond, as well as my water dish gardens. Once the weather warms up a bit, I'll see how well I did, so I'd love to see someone elses attempts too!

Hey Moodene, thanks for sharing! I can't get anything on the link to do anything except the about us button.
Yep, I can't get that link to do anything either....can you re-send it ?
Here is a link to the pricelist..
http://www.texaswaterlilies.com/index_files/Page457.htm
Hope it comes up this time....
Now the pricelist is wholesale but read the info and they do retail...by adding 1.5 to the amount of the waterplant...for example..
if the something cost...$5.95 -it will be $ 8.92 our cost...
I will getting more stuff from them at the end of Feb...
Yep, that link works for me- thanks for posting this, I tried a white tulip lotus that I paid 30$ for three years ago.. it had some trouble (boy was it the most unlucky tuber ever) and I've been hoping someone would have one to trade if I kept my eyes open in this forum but this is just about as good. Good luck with your tubers (10? I'm a little envious of the water gardens where you are!).
I think the website only truly works on IE. I can't get anything when I access it through Firefox, but it's just fine on IE.
So, Nadine, how about some pics? What do these things look like at the beginning? (I haven't a clue about these things, but hope to get some.)
Are they in the Garden Watchdog ? Sounds good if the plants are true to name but those prices sure seem cheap ?
Tommy told me that he is contacting someone on Dave's about putting this waterlily site on here..I am very please about my tubers..
Moodene, how much was shipping for the tubers? I am just dying to try them out. The tubers are in good shape? How about a pic.
I ordered fromTexaswaterlilies and was very pleased with the plants. I have two lotus and four lilies. The two tropical lilies were just loaded with buds. It is too cold to plant them outside here in zone five so I planted them in small pots and put them in five gallon bucket . They are in my home greenhouse and are blooming as we speak. They will live in the greenhouse till later in June . The tropicals are miniture Duben. The lotus and hardys are going in my pool outside. The postage was only nine or ten dollers for six plants,. They were packed very good. Linda
I did order some and they got them right out. I was amazed at the size of the lotus tubers. Great quality, cheap price and super packing.
I ordered 2 lilies and 2 lotus today. I also ordered some arrowhead and papyrus from them. How many days did it take to get to you after you ordered?
I can't remember for sure but I do know I was surprised when I got them , It was sooner than I expected. They are very nice.
Linda
I ordered 2 tropocal lilies and 1 papyrus on April 5th. Tommy said that they would mail no later than April 10th. On the invoice it states that it will be sent Priority mail. I have not gotten them yet.
Pinky, I too am waiting. I ordered on the 4th or 5th and haven't received by package yet either. I called this afternoon; hopefully I'll get a response back sometime tomorrow. I think I'll see if I can pick up the items from them directly next time-I'm only about 60 miles away.
He was very quick to ship out to me. But then I ordered mine before the spring rush. He is probabaly just a little backlogged.
aggiecorgi, Pixydish and srylaff has any of you got your packages from them? I still have not gotten mine.
I got mine yesterday. The shipping date on the package was the 10th.
I just put them in some water. What am I supposed to do with the tubers now? I've never had lotus before.
Everything I got looked really good. The water lilies already had tons of leaves. The lotus, as I said before, I don't know what to do with. The the tubers are big!
aggrecorgi you are so lucky. I still do not have mine yet. Still waiting.
Pixydish, We got ours on April 21st. Friday. I think they were getting overwhelmed with all the orders :)
I got my order on Friday, but they will have to resend. looks like they were very, very busy and had some temporary help who didn't mail things out correctly. The stuff was fairly well gone by the time it arrived. It's too bad, really. But these things do happen.
Rylaff, I have such zone envy when I see your photos!!!
I had some lotus, guess I still do, but I planted the tubers and they put up a couple of feeble leaves. Then the leaves died back and I haven't had anything since then. I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong, but if so I can't imagine what it could be. I have tropical lilies in the same water tub in the greenhouse and they are blooming their little hearts out. I have them planted in expensive aquatic potting 'soil'. Today I put fertilizer tabs in with them, just in case that might help. I really want to grow lotus!! Everyone says they are easy, but not so far for me!
Pixy, this is what works for me. I dont put mine in my pond. Instead they go into very large tubs or pots. I put soil in the bottom of the pot. Several inches. I put a few inches of water in the tub. I gently lay the tuber on top of the soil. I do not cover the tuber. I put on rock on the tuber to keep it down at the bottom. Be careful where you place the rock. It should go in the middle of the thick part, not on the ends where the roots will grow. I take three or four fertilizer tabs and poke them into the soil away from the tuber. Then I place the tub in full sun. Thats it, that all there is to it.
I have the floating surface leaves, but so far none on stems....I'm surprised yours are already up in zone 8b! I'm in 9b and so far nothing yet....I'm jealous!
:)
I start mine with just a few inches of water, maybe 3 inches. The water heat up quickly in the sun and accelerates the growing. Once it starts putting out aerial leaves, I start adding water.
Pixydish I ordered 2 tropical lilies and papyrus. My one tropical had lost all of its leaves. The other tropical looked good and healthy. The papyrus was all dried up and gone. Some of them were wrapped in newspaper that was bone dry. Only the one tropical was dampened. I emailed Tommy but have not heard anything back on it. I will give them a few days to answer, if not I will email again. I am sure they will make it right.
Pinky, yes, I believe they will. It's a family run business and I know their reputation is important to them. It sounds like there were lots of orders (probably thanks to DG) and the shipping got a bit out of control. If you haven't heard from tommy, you should email him again. I think he gets a lot of email and it's easy for one to slip through. That's what happened when i placed my order and had not heard back.
donna, i moved my lotus to the shallowest part of the pond so that the water is just barely over the top and brought the tubers up to the surface of the soil. It's going to be sunny and warm (for us) all week. Today I'm moving the tub to an area that gets more sun. That water should get warmer than the pond and I'll move them there.
Pixydish, how are you coming on your new shipment? I have emailed a few times in the past 8 days with no return email from Tommy nor the plants. Not sure what to make of this. :(
Pinky, are you sure you're sending to the right email address? Or that your spam blocker isn't blocking the replies? I placed an order with them too, everything came looking good except one plant was accidentally left out. I've emailed Tommy several times and have always received a prompt reply.
I think they must have been swamped with orders but they're more than making good on the missing plant for me.
Yes I am sure its the same email and no spam from them. I checked everything. Yes Tommy used to always email back until the last 8 days after the dead plants. Our order was made on April 5th and they said it would be here the next week. I guess they had some problems. Tommy always emailed back when they didnt come. We finally received the order on April 21st with 2 plants dried out and dead. We have not gotten any email responses back at all. I will try to call them next week.
I just got a email back from Tommy. He said they re-shipped monday and added some pond tabs for the problems. Something is very wrong here. We did not get anything this week and it is now Saturday. Priority mail takes 2-3 days. I think they are mixing up the orders.
Priority mail takes as long as the post office wants to take, Pinky. It's a myth that you get 2-3 day delivery with priority. Go to the USPS website and read their disclaimer on priority delivery.
Sorry you had so much trouble. I ordered on the 10th, my stuff was shipped out a few days later and arrived a few days after it was mailed. (I don't think it was 2-3 days, we're pretty far from Texas. A lot farther than you, I think.)
Everything was in great shape but the packers left out one plant. Tommy has bent over backwards to make up for the missing plant.
Glad you finally heard something and I hope your package shows up soon.
I hope it shows up. I have had my heart set on some tropicals this year :)
I have lots of hardys and wanted something different. I will keep watching for the shipment. I guess what made me wonder was they were not responding to my emails at all for many days. I sent them every few days with no reply.
