Hi Fellow Gardeners,
I've been away from the forum for TOO LONG! The seed catalogs have me back in gardening mode again. We're going to try growing some strawberries and blueberries this year and wonder if anyone has particular varieties that they like. I've been reading a lot about both plants, but end up more confused when I'm done than when I started.
Also could use some info about how many plants to get to start. The strawberries seem to come in 25-plant groups. Any idea what the yield would be on 25 everbearing plants?
As you can probably tell, I'm a real novice here and don't know much about this. Would really appreciate any info you can share. Thanks.
Lily
Anybody growing strawberries and blueberries?
I planted 2 blueberry plants last spring-so we shall see!!
I have 2 kinds of strawberry-june and everbearing.
they do really well here. i may have a few plants to spare-we tilled a bunch under last yr!
If you got 25 or each that would start a nice size patch!!! as for yield its hard to tell with everyone picking and eating all the time! ;)
let me know if your coming to the plant trade and i will get some for you!
cant say how many for sure!
I also planted a few blueberry plants last spring. This summer will tell if I get any. I have been told that they are hard to grow because they need acidic soil.
I have strawberries, but don't know the kind - neighbor gave me a bunch - 40 or so and that makes a decent patch for a family - plus they spread like wildfire!! Quack grass got into our bed, so I'm not sure what I am going to do this year - maybe rototill part up and try again...grrr
I want blueberries too - is their a particular brand/kind that does well in Mich?
Dori - Thanks for the offer! I'm not sure if I'll be able to come to your plant trade in June. Too far away, yet, to plan. Will know better probably by May.
I got a catalog from Indiana Berry & Plant Co. yesterday that has a lot of information about various berries. If anyone is interested, their website address is www.inberry.com. I checked the Garden Watchdog and they got a very high rating, so I'm going to give them some business. One of the blueberry varieties (Bluejay) was developed here in Michigan. I think I'll definitely give that one a try.
