Orchid potting soil??

Kittrell, NC(Zone 7b)

I am finally getting my second set of true leaves....so now time to repot. Is orchid potting soil acceptable for plumie babies?
Thanks,
Melanie

Any fast draining soil is good. You might find Orchid soil expensive in the long run. Most of us use some kind of potting soil (Lowe's Jungle Growth in my case) mixed with about 1/3 of something like perlite or even sand, just as long as it drains well and doesn't hold the water. Peat based compost is therefore less suitable.

Hi Meag, doesn't Orchid mix have a lot of bark pieces in it? It certainly is well-draining as Hetty said, which is good, and I think my friend Robert does mix some in to his potting soil mixture, but bark chips don't hold a lot of nutrients so I don't think I personally would plant my plumeria seedlings in 100 percent orchid mix. A well-draining peat-based potting soil is best for nutrient-holding capacity. Since most potting soil mixes stay too moist, mixing in Perlite or Pumice often helps to make it better draining.
