Hybrid plums

Atmore, AL(Zone 8b)

Does anybody know what is the best hybrid asian/american plum tree? I have read that the "bruce" plum is the best one but I never see them being sold. Also, where would be the most affordable place to get them?

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

escambiaguy, "Bruce" is considered a VERY good plum. You can get them at "Edible Landscaping". (They show them to be good in zones 6-8...not sure if you are in zone 8 or 9...can you add your zone to your info..it'll help in the future when you are asking questions, etc.)

Their link is: http://eat-it.com/

And by they way....a hearty "WELCOME TO DG!" Hope to see you around the site!

Thanks Horseshoe, I have two chickasaw plum trees already. The plums taste delicious but they are not big enough to really enjoy. One of them is old and has trunk rot so i'm thinking of cutting it down and replacing it with a hybrid plum, so my other chickasaw will still have a mate.

Sounds like a plan to me. I can see it now...Plum Jelly, Plum Jam, Plum pudding, Plum Pie, Dried plums, etc!

Hope it all works out for you!

Happy Growing!

Well I finally bought a "bruce" plum today from Lowes. The spot I was thinking of planting it in is about 100ft from the chickasaw plum. Would that be too far apart?

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Yep...100ft is very far. I believe the usual distance recommendation is either "right next to another plum" or, depending on the type (dwarf, semi-dwarf, standard) 15-45 ft apart.

Glad you found one nearby...saved on shipping, eh?

Have you considered any of the AU series?
AU Homesite, AU Roadside, AU Amber, AU Rubrum, etc. Japanese hybrid plulms, developed upstate from you at Auburn, and should be good performers.

Don't know where they'd be available from, but your county extension office should be able to find a source, even if they had to contact someone in the hort dept. on main campus to find out where you can get 'em from.
Seems like Classical Fruits, up in Moulton AL used to carry some, if not all of the AU series: Classical Fruits, 8831 AL Highway 157, Moulton, AL 35650. (205) 974-8813. Large selection of fruit varieties including new disease-resistant ones.

I 'll just have to wait and see how this bruce plum does this year. The leaves are about halfway emerged and I already see aphids and ants on it. I sprayed it with some bug-b-gone spray this morning.
