Winter sowing in Texas

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I do this every winter; but decided to post a thread this year to see if I'm the only one. My favorite smelling annual of all time is stocks--but they must experience cold temps to bloom...these were planted Nov 20, 2005. The little guys are snapdragons but they have not grown as well this winter.

and poppies.

All these guys live together in the front (all poppies, snaps, and stocks). Everything from seed.

These guys in the back need to be planted outside in the ground today! lol

sweet peas Nov 23, 2006. I'm heavy into mulch. The area behind is YELLING at me to plant some tomatoes--lol--and there's a rangoon creeper back behind. I've got some other sweet peas on the side of the house but they are in shade and will take a pic of them later today when the sun shines in the "east canyon" of the house--lol.

Looks like plants for the Round Up to me!!! If I could get stuff growing that well from seed, I wouldn't have any problem getting items to take to the swap!
I sow seed in the garden and they will grow fine, but my potting lacks skill!

Doesn't this lettuce look great in the winter? This went out around Thanksgiving...I keep pulling this as I need it...all the neighbors keep telling me how delicious it is; I think that's a hint to give them some more!

Beautiful!

Sheila--works a little better in pots for me--less weed competition! Those sweet peas are not in pots (that's just a barrier--no bottoms). These hollyhocks were done about Oct 20th; not in pots either. The lettuce I always start in those "jiffy thingies"--are real educated term. I always use them for lettuce and summer annuals such as zinnias (which I have under lights now--but I think that might be another thread).

Maybe when I retire I can get more ambition to try other things. Your plants are an inspiration.

Thanks! Seeds are easy; just add water. I work 50-60 hours a week. But I am off all of June, July, and half of Aug.....come on summer!

A lonely geranium which has survived in a neglected corner for three years now....talk about a survivor!

Houston is much kinder to plants. We are in a bit of a frying pan here this year with the drought. :-(

Sheila--we went from Mother's day until July 4 without a drop of rain and at least ten days of 100 heat. It ain't any kinder down here! lol

That's no fun. I used to live in Houston and enjoyed everything being green and very rarely snow / ice. The humidity was draining!
So are you going to join us at the RU in April with some of those beautiful plants?

One of those flats just got planted and another is about half done...I'm waiting for my teenage daughter to bring me a cheeseburger home for lunch--I'm starving. I guess I'm gonna have to start some new seeds/more seeds this weekend for the roundup. What are you wanting? It's easier to grow "to order" than to shoot in the dark.

By the way, we had the humidity (of course) just no rain--highest water bills I ever saw.

I need the reader's digest condesed version of the roundup--is it sat the 29th of April? where in college station exactly is it? I suppose if I can get out early enough on Friday night (TAKS science day is the 29th) I could sleep in the back of one of my friends pick up trucks. I don't know if I can convince any guys I know to take me up there in their truck--I only have a Toyota (not alot of room for plants)--they are not into "gardening" they just enjoy eatting the veggies and showing the garden off to their friends as a convienant "beverage" stop as they ride around on their motorcycles (know anything about men and their harleys in TX?lol). I do have one friend from work with a camper shell on his truck and he could drop me and plkants off and go fishing at lake Somerville during the day.

Here is the main link to the RU and the date is April 29. They are still trying to lock in a park. To do that Dave wants a head count, so sign up if you plan on going, it is the second link.

Oh, just notice you sign up already, great!
As for what to sow, everyone loves plants that butterflies love. But don't do anything special for me. Just plan on meeting everyone and having a good time.
