Mango inflorescence

Fulton, MO

I have a new, small Mango 'Carrie' planted in a raised bed in the greenhouse. It has had a terminal panicle bloom for the last few weeks. I haven't done anything to aid pollination. There are fans running, of course, but nothing right on the plant. A few ants are seen, but not many other bugs. Will a greenhouse mango self pollinate? Thanks. SB

All mangos are supposed to be self fertile, some don't even require pollination to produce fruit. High humidity can hamper fertilization though, so keep those fans running!

SB,I have one growing from seed,about 2 yrs now,it's about 5 ft tall,in a 5 gallon container,about how tall is yours?
Do you know if yours is from seed or cutting?
How old do you think yours might be,before it flowered?

this is a picture of my 'glenn' . it is not in a greenhouse but i know that throughout the years it doesn't like too much rain or humidity it can mold the flowers. your fans sound like they will really help. the hurricanes this year have really stimulated new growth all over even the branches. i think your carrie is self pollinating. i have seen mangos on 4 ft. tall trees. hopefully you can get couple out of it this year. that is juicy fiberless mango. enjoy.
ps. we usually make mangoritas or mango coladas.

I am coming to your house Cass!! I love mangoes esp the Philippines ones with no fiber!! Though this year I have found HUGE GREEN mangoes in 2 stores and I mean HUGE!!! They are the best things ever. Oh how I wish I had one now. I can't think of their name now but they were the size of about 4 regular sized ones. My parrot would sit on my shoulder and eat it faster than I could.

Thanks, everybody.

Candela, I was standing over the mango today and noticed a moldy odor; it was the flower panicle of the mango! A couple of the tips look bad. I don't care so much for fruit this year, and I'm not sure the tree is large enough anyway at around 2'. But if these tips die back, where does the next flush of vegetative growth come from? I see some pinhead-sized green bumps at the base of the panicle, does the vegetative growth come from there?

Tropicman, I think its just a year old. It's grafted.

The new growth comes out below the panicle, those green bumps should become leaves.
Kell, I know the big green ones you're talking about! Those are good. We have the green ones, the red ones and those yellow ones(I don't like the yellow ones).
