This is just beautiful. If it wasn't so hot here I would have a garden full of Fuchisa's and yellow primroses, my two favorites flowers.

Hi stetchworth, I love fuchsias, my daughter kept buying them (as well as me!), and I grew from cuttings to share, but lately have got involved with so many other types of plants they just don't get the attention they deserve. I do have a long list still surviving, I went through the varieties and made a 'current' list, and I have at least 70, surprised me! I have lost a lot of very nice ones, and was surprised when I was 'listing' just how many I have lost, it got me wanting to go and get them and more new ones again, I am hopeless when it comes to wanting plants! The ones I still have are either hardy and in the ground, some not flowering at all as too shady, but others I put by a south wall doing really well, plus I fed them! Others get through the winters in a cold greenhouse in pots. I can feel a visit to the nursery coming on! Some like quite a bit of warmth, if you are very hot then they might do well in a shady spot, the large flowered ones tend to like it warmer.

I live close to a fucshia grower and breeder, Muncasters in Gainsborough, and can get small plants for 50p each, that is about $0.85, so I guess I am lucky, they have species too, and I think around 800 varieties.

I am just green with envy, maybe it's because I am English that I love these two plants so much reminds me of my childhood.

My mother was born in Gainsborough, small world huh.

Would you please ask the grower which ones will take the heat the most maybe I will get lucky and be able to find one that I can grow and enjoy.

Thanks,
Vi

Small world indeed! I was conversing with someone else on DG that had lived near Grantham, about 20 miles south of us, and her daughter still lives at Newark, 10 miles south. Gainsborough is 20 miles north, I used to live near there and my kids went to the High School there. My daughter lives there. But I am Australian! So I get jealous of people in the States with their hot summers and tropicals, but I am making headway!

I will be going to the nursery in the next couple of weeks so if I remember I will ask! When I get my eyes on those fuchsias my mind will go to jelly...

Here's a link to their web site and some listed varieties

Well would you know it! I looked at a link on their site, and they have a list of fuchsias that did well in our 2004 hot, dry year. It was hot for 2 months and no rain, temps highest we have ever had, up to 33C I think, and often in the high 20s. (35C is 95F). You might get hotter, but in a sheltered place worth a try.

I have a Whiteknight's Pearl in a dry, sandy spot next to a hedge, it gets the sun in the afternoon, but very little moisture, It flowers like mad, and regrows from the previous years wood, it could be worth a try. There is a pic in my PF, if you go to my info page you will see it, I put it on recently and a lot went through the back door, I put 17 pics on in one day! They mostly just take 2 from your list for PF pictures.

The bottom link on that last one takes you to a list of sites, I went to the fuchsia (plants bt name) one, and found a site in Washington with 600 varieties, but they don't appear to do mail order.

I looked at their links and went to the American Fuchsia Society, then to a suppliers list link, and a place there called fuchsia galore do mail order and have 1,000 varieties, so you have a lot to go on there, they could advise you too

Just in case that was confusing, a link to the AFS links, and if you click on the link near the bottom that says 'Fuchsia Nurseries and Garden Sites' you will find it!

Thank you for going to all this trouble for me, I really appreciate it, should be able to find something that will do well in my area even if I have to keep it in the shade.

Thanks so much.
