Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

ms c and all..nope that's a gallardia...Texas has them...some call them different names...firewheel and the like ...if anyone wants cheery flowers...let me PUSH ..what i consider to be one of the world's greatest flowers...the "california marigold"...really a cosmos...but orange and yellow and so cheery...this yellow one (orange more dominant)...growing out front in the jungle...the gallardia are a carefree wildflower in many places...gerbera daisies are neat...sometimes difficult outside the greenhouse for some folks...

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

WOW ! Something like the tree lol we had Mexican Sunflower. I had a little stick and it grew almost as big as our house ! People driving by my hubby said would stop and say how beautiful and ask what it was. Last time I was down that way it looked like they cut it way down one foot. It bloomed all the time.

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

well allison..when the people across the street were dealing in drugs...the police would watch from behind my huge california marigolds...lol....took pics of them...forotunately they are all gone now...and the house almost destroyed by hurricanes...in this pic you can see them on the right....they were so tall...see them with the orange blossoms

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Mexican Sunflower . It would not go threw the link Laurie. Few years ago while my sister was visitng she always likes to go to this orange juice place. They had stick in a baggies little water no leaves and instructions for a Dollar :))
I wanna tell you we planted it in good organic manua ( SP) eleanor's Vf-11. and WOW it grew so full bushy like nothing I;d ever seen. We should have planted in the midle of the yard. I grew one side as tall as our home Hubby would cut it down some and wrapped aroun ti the other side so I could see it from the kitchen window. !
and it bloomed large , xtra large flowers :))
I gave my nurse some cuttings she's always trying to grow things I give her. Their still alive two years later but growing slow for her lol.
We took a whole bunch of cuttings with us and with all the other stuff hubby had to do we did not get one down, but my nurse did maybe one of my vol.

Tithonia diversifolia
“Bolivian Sunflower”

Sunflowers for Winter! Now this is a big plant & you have to have the room for it, but wow - it’s a stunner & fragrant, too! Quickly growing from 8-15’ tall & spreading to probably 6’ wide - or more in rich soil - it blooms from November thru March. Many stout, branching stalks are formed from the base & are topped by many 6” to 7” bright golden daisies. The fragrance is my favorite - chocolate! (No kidding). The deep leaves are large & deeply lobed & tropical looking. Tithonia diversifolius can be cut back to 1’ tall after bloom to control height somewhat. Also, it’s easy to prune to control width. Rich soil is best.

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Oh, nice, I've grown that tithonia before - about 4 or 5' tall here and a butterfly magnet! , but it's nothing like this other tithonia. the one I saw in San Pablo was like a tree. I asked to buy it, but they were out at the moment. Should have snipped a cutting! Oh well, I guess I'll just have to go back and get more plants when they have it in stock.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I looked up Mexican Sunflower in plantfiles :)) And fount it. And I sent a picture in to be posted. Now if I could just find my big tree full of flowers picture :))
All for a little dollar stick :))

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Mine was a tree :))
I'm sure I could get a cutting and start a plant for you Laurie :))

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Well in Seminole when my ssiter was visitng they had the stick for sale with instructions for a dollar. They had small plants too I forget how much Cheep.
You know those big Orange juice places.

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

ah Allison i knwo what you mean..i'll have to ck at some of those...i know they sell the miniatrue oranges etc..

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

The place in Seminole was probably Orange Blossom Groves. It is closed and will probably be homes or condos in the future.

I grow the smaller orange variety of tithonia "Torch" and love them. The Monarchs love them too. I think I have 2 pots of rooted stick of the other one I got from a friend recently.
I'll have to go out to the greenhouse and check on them.

Jan...

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

jan...good for you...hope they're doing well

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

I have a couple of extra rooted pieces of the yellow bolivian sunflower if anyone wants one for postage. I can do 2 offers at this time. I also have plenty of seeds for the orange "torch" tithonia for SASBE.

Orange Blossom Groves.closed for good? They use to close for the season summer ? Wow my Dad loved going there and my sister and her husband when they visited. Thats where I got my stick and a tree grew out of it so fast like Jack in the bean stalk no kidding around :))
Did they all close Clearwater ? I can't get out anymore. Mom would never let my sister know she'd be too said. I thought it was open last year when she came ?
As she bought a couple gallons of tangerine juice to bring home to her husband in RI .

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

They closed and sold the one in Seminole for development, I believe. The one in Clearwater was sold to another orange grove but I can't think of the name off hand.
It will remain the same as far as I know. I will miss their orange ice cream. LOL

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Hey cool! I sent my postage to Budgie so I'll have some for the summer. What exactly is a 'stick' is that how they sell them? and you just root it?

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

A stick is just a cutting. Mine are already rooted so no problem.
Jan...

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Yes it was a stick in plastic bagtiny water. Like over night grew into a tree. Like Jack in the beanstalk. No kiding. Maybe it was Eleanor's VF-11
