Have's and Have Not's Sticky

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Critter or someone mentioned having a sticky with lists of our have's and wants for trades just within this forum- which is a great idea, and easy enough to accomplish. I'm happy to get the ball rolling on another sticky but thought this would be a good place for us to lay our our 'guidelines' and ideas for how to post, trade etiquette, how to manage your post etc.

The truth is, we have a place for this on our DG info pages/trade logs etc. But it would be nice to have one sticky thread that you could scroll through to look at the have's/wants list in a consolidated way. The other way, you have to go to each person's trade list, which could be time consuming.

Sure would save on eBay and other mail order purchases if we have the plants/leaves to trade here first.

my thoughts are that each person could post ONLY once. Then each person is responsible for editing their one post as their list changes (i.E. one post per person so this list doesn't go on forever and ever). Here's an idea, and just that, not dictating at all, but just kind of 'stream of consciousness' typing here.

(SAMPLE)
(PL = Plant, PT = Plantlet, LV = Leave(s) etc..)

HAVE:

Allegro Harvest Moonglow -PL
Aly’s Rosy Baby -PT
Aly's Blizzard Bunny -LV
B-Man's Barcellona -PT
Maggie Lee -PT
Penny Lover -LV

WANT:
Aly's Key Lime Pie
Bud's Irish Eyes
Newtown Peer Review
Painted Silk

Lists are in Alphabetical order (MS word will do this for you with a click of a mouse), and use the code as to what you have Plants, Plantlets, Leaves, Leaf Pot or what ever we want to call it)

I'd likely manage my have/want list in MS word then just copy/paste it into the sticky.

Anybody like this idea? Other ideas? Additions? etc... If so, it's easy enough for us to request that Terry make us a stick out of a new thread. if not, no problem. Just thought I'd offer it out there.

Oh, I like the idea of each person posting their own personal 'trade rules' or requirements in their post, Ali.

This way too, all the 'do you have this AV' threads wont get lost in the shuffle, way down at the bottom of the page somewhere. Easy to find who has what.

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

I love this idea!
.
One post per person - definitely agree.

Northwest, MO(Zone 5a)

I think this is a great idea.

Just one question...When people edit their posts...after a while won't the post get really long with all the edits?

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Hi Deb, well yes and no. When you want to edit, you would click the 'edit' just below your name. (see image)
(sorry if you already know this, not trying to insult)

I think she might mean that string of "this post was edited on...."s at the end.

I suppose if it gets that bad, that person could delete that post so it's empty, and post again below.

sorry, I got way-layed (sp?) on a phone call and didn't finish the thought. So Your edit text box would look something like this. You would erase out info you don't want, and start over. If you click the preview you can erase out the part that says 'This message was edited Feb 2, 2006 9:14 AM
and erase it.

which you might get a string of after lots of edits.

LOL, begonia explained about editing out the edits while I was typing.... so I edited out my explanation!

I think posting lists is a great idea (and, no, I wasn't the one who came up with it)!

I'd like to suggest that we post a list of all varieties we have, even if they're not big enough to trade yet. After the variety name, as begonia suggested, we can post what we may have available. I know we'll be patient with one another if it turns out that a plantlet has already been spoken for but not edited off somebody's list.

I'd also like to suggest that people keep track of trades they're arranging separately from their post (notebook, Trade Tracker, whatever system works for you) so we don't end up with a bunch of entries like:
'Rob's Smarty Pants' 4 sets ears, 3 small suckers, one promised to Lorry, one to Allison, largest promised to Begonia... etc
In other words, our trade notes should go somewhere else so this thread doesn't get cluttered. Same for all trade requests and offers -- Please don't post them on the thread with the lists.

(Sorry if that was already quite obvious to everyone!)

Ahh good points Critter. The first post in the thread could Have the rules and regs such as "don't ask for trades in this thread. DMail privately etc."

Each person would be responsible for tracking and editing their own 'log' on the thread.

I think it's good to say what you have and maybe put a N/A after it. At least it would help someone who is patient enough to wait until it is ready for trade.

I think another day or so of comments here and then I'll put in a request with Terry. (or who ever wants to manage the sticky can, I'm certainly not in charge, but just trying to help (smiley face)

Would be helpful to have someone type a bit for the first thread of rules, etc. (and I'm happy to if no one else wants to)

okee dokee gotta get off my 'puter and cook some chow for hungry family!

Ooh I love this idea,too.

Will this list be limited to ONLY African Violets or Gessies or will there be a variety of plants offered??

And do we only post what we have /want to trade or is it supposed to be our entire collection??

MsC

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

That's up to you, MsC, but I'll probably post my collection list because it includes varieties that hopefully will be available for sharing in the future. I'm sure we'll all do our best to keep our lists up to date, but just like with the Trade Lists, things can slip past you.... So if something is on my list, that means it is probably available, but it's possible that it has recently been spoken for... I don't want my list to be a binding contract sort of thing, like if I say I have a plantlet that means I will send it right out to you.

I don't see any reason why other plants can't be listed also... I think it especially makes sense to include general type comments like, "ask me about spider plant and philodendron cuttings" or, " will also trade for sun-loving perennials."

I want my list to be a resource, a place people can look to see what I have, what I'm currently propagating, and what I might be looking for, so they can Dmail me to see if/when it's possible to put together a fun trade.

I think it'll be less cumbersome to keep our lists updated here (in our posts on the proposed sticky) than to put entries for each plant in our DG Trade Lists.

I do like the idea of making this thread an official sticky rather than just putting a link to it in our general forum sticky.

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

I'm not set on any particular way of doing it,I think it is a great idea. I do kinda wonder about posting rules, etc...
I think posting what you have/want at the time might be a shorter way of doing it,insted of a whole collection.

I personally hate rules,I like to do what I want & it not be dictated by someone else.
Kinda of like the trade CritterO & I did this past summer...it started out as a simple trade for Av's and we each ended up with a huge mixed box of this & that. I think we were both very happy...so something along those lines might be considered

Also for exampple: if Allsion posted everything she has
( assuming she has the largest collection at the moment) then her list will be very long, then yours, mine & mkjones has a good size collection,too...with all the editing etc I think it might get very lengthy, so how can we deal with that and still keep it simple???

MsC

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

I think it's up to each person. I will probably post my wants, "have to trade now or sometime soon-ish"s, and the "I might have to trade - check with me" part of what I own. I know already that I won't be too good about keeping it up-to-date so I will try to write mine so that it is relatively stable.

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Dave would probable shoot me...but I wonder if we could have a TRADE forum within the AV forum...lol.
A Forum with in A Forum...that's the way DG started...of course with the recent headaches Dave may run me off for such thoughts, but we can always dream big!

Going to put that idea with the wish for Dave to add the edition of First Class to the AV forum,too...

Allison,
I think you are an incredible generous person and I don't mind you setting your rules.

I think we just have to politely disagree ... the contest was just that ,a contest...this appears to be an on going TRADE forum and I would just like to include anyone.

Everyone has to start somewhere.

Have a good night.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I do understand trades and sharing and read all the information help of trades in DG information about trading And it's OK to say "NO"
http://davesgarden.com/trading/primer/
Also Jill posted and said it's ok to say "NO' and sometimes when yor tading or beig kind giving people plants for shipping they act like their placing an order..
I have shipped to the people that had nn named African violets in this group in order so they could join in the fun of our Secret trade. While some were turned away from the secret trade as they did not have a trade history.
But I wanted to be able to include all who wanted to join in the fun! even in they did not have Av plants by providing them wit planty of plants to grow out in order to have leaves to trade and provide them with leaves to grow plants to have to trade ::)) I included everyone.
>>>>>>>>
When I was new MsC to the forum I did not know anything about DG's. I thought you owned it.
And you made it clear to me in your postings
"http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/554832/
AS YOU POSTED
~~"Basically, we all like to share our plants & information. One of the things ME thinks makes our group so special is that we are still small and most only grow for the sheer pleasure of the AV's. "~~"
>>>>>>>>>
I am sorry but I can not ship to everyone and I can not aford to trade with everyone. One I can't aford the shipping, and two I don't have room to isolate each new incoming plants for2-3 months. ....
You may not like Rules I don't like Orders .
But I do feel the suggestions in Dg's trade

Is a good asset to read before trading :))

hmmm... looks like I missed the discussion.

I trade quite a lot of plants including orchids which do not propagate like gesneriads, and I know that trading with unknown people can be a tricky business. I admit I tend to do "serious" trading only with people I've dealt with before - by "serious", I mean plants that are relatively rare (especially some of the orchids), that I don't have many of, or that do not propagate easily. With other plants, I often ship for postage.

The people I've run into here have all been great. The postage for every "for postage" offer has arrived, even when I shipped first.

I can't say the same of trading generally - there have been wonderful first time trades, and horribly opportunistic longtime traders. And some of my new plant obsessions definitely started with first time trading - like begonias (MsC) and hoyas (someone from another forum).

But I also have my rules which are mostly about time, time, time. (I'm sure plenty of others have this little shortage.) I seem to have less and less time to track my trades and pack and ship these days. I like to trade, but I can only do it if it's manageable for me. So I'm trying to figure out how I will write my sticky post so I can make this work.

Looking forward to the sticky :-)

Northwest, MO(Zone 5a)

I continue to be excited about the possibility of this working. I really like the idea of being able to go to the sticky and post what I have, and what I need. As gets a little cumbersome following everything in all the different threads.

Deb

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

I so agree Deb!
It is very hard ..sometimes I promise to someone..and then I forget what thread said it in..then I forget who and UGH!
If I had one thread to refer to..it would make life A LOT easier.

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

This is great input from all! MsC. for me, rules meant things like
dont make more than one post in this thread. One per person.
Maintain your own post and keep it current or delete it all together if you are unable to trade at the moment - it can always be updated later .
Don't post your requests in this thread, rather Dmail the individual privately etc etc..

Primarily for the posting of info. In otherwords we need some kind of guidelines so it doesn't get all 'willy nilly' and we can keep the sticky organized to a certain extent.

Each person can post their own rules in their trade page and put a link in their sticky -or- put their rules on their post.
some may want to only trade with 'regulars' to this forum, some may not. I think that is the individuals decision.

If you want no rules -that's cool too! That's the beauty of this. each person can say what they have to trade or not. or if they have rules or not! It's kind of win win.

For me personally, I think we should keep it av's and gessies. Otherwise it's just the same as the other trade section. Since Dave's already has a trade section, I think he probably wants us to use it for it's intende purpose BUT,

IF we have other goodies to trade, we can mention it and point to our trade lists to make is simple. Perhaps say something like 'I also grow daylilies, begonias, cross stich, chocolate, teenagers, and such go see my trade list - I'm open to all kinds of trades for AV's'

(just being silly)

Ali, I completly see your point. Some people can be opportunistic and just want something for nothing. We have a great group here and so far so good, but yes. Say "NO" if you want to. It's your hard work and $ that went into your babies. You can choose who adopts them! =).

on a personal note. I'm glad that the trade for postage was open to me. When I asked Ali for the easter av's for postage and she said yes, I thought I must be dreaming. And then to be accepted into the Easter trade was awesome. I would not be participating in this forum had Critter not told me about the AV's Ali was offering and had Ali not made good on her offer. I'd be just a plain ol' begonia head.

But now look, I'm a full blown addict with a growing collection of AV's and nice Gessies too!

To all, I'm certainly not dictating what is what, and hope it's not taken that way. {hug hug}
Also, no one has offered to get this going, so does that mean you just want me to keep running with the ball?

a big good morning to all.. hope everyone has a super day!

Northwest, MO(Zone 5a)

Hey girl...you have my vote to run with the ball. :)

All the time , hard work so many hours and Love you put into our two stickys I so appreciate more than words can say. All your learning postings and kind cheery words. You are one of a kind Laurie your an Angel :))
So nice one again to help us with a trade sticky :))
I agree with everything you said. It does not make sense to have an Av and Gessie trade with all other plants when Dave has already been kind and hard work to set up trading sections and plant trading But links to them forums for us :))
Excellent idea !
Your are so kind once again to take the time and your knowledge to put this Sticky together for us :))
Thank you ! Thank you ! Thank you ! Thank you !
You are appreciated .
PS Sorry your sick hope you feel better soon :))

ooohh - I just saw this. This is exactly what I was talking about in another thread. I thought of it more for our forum since everyone was speaking of wish lists and you shouldn't have bought that as I have one..etc

Yes I agree that everyone should be responsible to update their info, otherwise, what's the point.

I love the idea that it's a sticky so it's easy to find.

And definitely - one post per person that get's updated. You should email/dmail them with any questions or use another thread.

Thanks everyone!

Oh Pooh Bear...(pout) I wonder why? I wonder if we could still have a thread that would work in a similar way - with a wish list at least and the poster could just update the wish list when obtained by removing or if there were new hopes by adding?

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

yes, Anita that could be done, and I think it's still a good idea to be discussed.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

:)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I think using Trade Tracker rather than trying to keep track of trading arrangements (whose name is on what plant) on a thread makes sense. However, I did like the idea of posting have/want lists on the forum rather than in our DG trade lists.... makes it easier to figure out who might have something you're considering ordering etc. I guess we could still start a thread with one post from each of us like we're discussing and either "bump" it regularly or link it to the existing sticky, but that's really doing an end run around Dave's request that we use the Trade List feature instead of adding a sticky for this.

The Trade List feature can be a little cumbersome (it's easier to edit a single post), and, as I mentioned, Trade Lists are much more widely accessable & searchable, which can be both good & not so good at times. I'll have to think about how I want to deal with AVs on my Trade List.

I may just stick with my current thing, which is to have a thread with photos etc of what I have and what I'm propagating. When people make trade request posts on that thread, I add them to their wish lists in my trade tracker. And when I'm putting together a trade or offering my AVs to somebody, I can Dmail them a link to my thread so they can check out what I have.
