Palm Identification guide?

SF Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

Is anyone aware of an online (or even print) guide to palm identification?

I did some googling and couldn't really find anything useful.

Thanks.. That's really kind of the opposite of what I need though.. I'm looking for something that gives the visual differences between species and allows you to figure out what you have that way..

Kind of like this guide for pepper species:

Basically what I need is palmbob's brain in a convenient format :)

Go to plant files, and search in General Search: Arecaceae. You will get an alphabetical list of all the palm species with a thumbnail photo by each one. That way you can cruise through all the palms in a hurry, and at least get a good idea of what the palm will look like (though some thumbnails are still of a bad photo, or seedling for some reason).

I guess I'm not explaining myself clearly..

What I'd like to be able to do is to go from a picture or visual description of various aspects, and be able to take a good guess at at least the genus of the palm. I could personally do this by studying pictures of each and every palm in the universe but what I'm looking for is some kind of chart or guide that anyone could follow.

A palm cheat sheet! LOL

I too would love to be able to ID the various palms in my yard/neighborhood. I've just ordered a new book "Hardy Palms for the Southeast" and hope that will do the trick for me.

For me, Plantfiles is a great place to do some initial research on a plant but only when I have a name for something I am specifically looking for. Just the way my feeble brain works, but searching the files boggles my mind. Information overload (I can't look through wallpaper books either).

I use PACSOA's (Palm and Cycad Societies of Australia) site when I'm looking up palms, too. Lots of palms and cycads listed.

Great site Carter. I saw some Rhapis yesterday. I have been wanting one and after reading this write up on them, I am going to go back and get one. They want $99 for a 4 ft one, so I was slow to buy one but I guess it is a pretty reliable plant.

Thanks, Kell. It's the first place I go to look for info on any palms or cycads. I like the Rhapis palms, too!
