Which small tree would you plant?

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

Big Lots has their trees in and I was wanting to get a Crabapple, but now I can't decide. I think I need something in the middle of my bed but don't want something that will eventually block my sunshine. IF I get one of these, these are my choices: "Profusion" Crabapple, "Adams" Crabapple, or the Newport Flowering Plum. Does anyone have an opinion on any of these?

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Hello Paige, you could go with this one if possible. It is a native.

I hope it helps.

Josephine.

I didn't see any of this kind there. I think I'm going to look at Lowe's and Home Depot too tho. I looked thru the thread about native trees and am thinking tho that the Bird of Paradise tree would really be good, but I've never seen one for sale and not sure that I could afford it either. (These trees at Big Lots are just $13) I don't want anything to block my view or my sun, and that BoP tree is very "airy", sort of like the Desert Willow. My 102 year old "friend" has a baby BoP tree, but I haven't seen her in about a month and it would be kind of rude to just drop by and ask for the tree. LOL (although she did offer it once) I need to go visit her anyways.

I've still got my baby willow that you gave me and am hoping it's still alive. It grew quite a bit but the end of one very long branch is dead. ? It's on the side of my house and won't be big for a long time.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Paige, go ahead and ask your neighbor friend for the tree, I an sure she would be thrilled to know that it will have a good home.
The Desert Bird of Paradise is indeed very open and airy, just what you need for your situation, besides having lovely flowers most of the summer.
They are also very easy to keep pruned and under control, I love mine.

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

Well Josephine, I went to my friends and came home with a small BoP tree. She was unable to water her yard this year being that she is so old and she just said that things would have to survive on their own. I'm hoping that this little tree was able to hold on. I do remember it blooming so I think that it should be ok. I was able to dig it out without cutting the main root, but now I'll have a weird hole to dig. I also got some seeds that were on the ground. Wish me luck! (I still might get a Crabapple tho)

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

That is wonderful Paige, I bet it will do well, cant wait to see it flourishing. The seeds are easy to sprout too.
You may end up with two lovely trees in your yard.

Gordonville, TX(Zone 7b)

Gonna need more property b/c that desert Bop and native crabapple look mighty interesting!

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

Josephine (sorry Paige to run in on your thread) on the way home from seeing you I stopped at Big Lots looking for the 10 cent seeds. No veggie seeds (found at Ace latter) but they had a crabapple with its roots out of the bag. So I asked for the manager and asked if they knew they had a tree out of the bag. She said she did and was about to throw it out, so being bold I asked if I could take it off their hands - and did for free! So a 7 foot Profusion Crabapple for the taking to save then to clean it up. I dont know how long it was out and the roots had some damage but they roots were still moist so I hope they were all ok. Anyway so it might live or it might die but the price was more then right.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Mitch! that is terrific, I bet it will make it, just soak it well and trim it back,
it will be nice to see what happens. That was a lucky find indeed!

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

I have a flowering plum. There is one growing in a huge cow pasture several miles up the road. My DH knew I admired it so much, that one night on his way home, about 1 in the morning he went over the fence and probably 1/3 of a mile across the field and grabbed ahold of one growing out from it. It came up with a very large root about 2 inch diameter and growing at a 45 degree angle and around 3 ft long. That was a very odd hole. But It did not even wilt. I told him with all the love he put into getting it and especially noticing how much I loved that tree, God did not let it wilt or lose 1 leaf.

My 2 friends were green, they also wanted one. He said he would get them one. Well I was reminded that there is a huge brahama bull in the field. And he said they could forget it. Had he remembered it was there mine I would still be admiring from afar. For a long time we would round that corner and I would tell him the bull knew what he looked like and was still looking for him. I highly recomend them as the leaves are burgandy all year round.

Another I highly recomend is a fruitless pomegranate. Oh my gosh, every spring mine takes my breath away. The blooms are the most gorgeour orange. A little darker than a popcycle and are fuller than a carnation. The pictur below doesn't do it justice. It can be pruned but I did not do that so it looks huge, I have had it around 15 years, It is a slow grower and the color is orange not the true color in the picture. You would love it. My friend found one at a nursery for 22 dollars for a 2 or 3 gallon in the last few years.

Wow I bet I would love to have a Bird of Paradise tree. If you have any luck with those seeds and have too many, please remember me.
I have never seen one but I bet I will be looking it up.

Blessings,
Sandy ^8^

Is this the one you have?? Gorgeous.

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

This is the one. Sandy, I would be happy to send you one of these pods. They are like Mimosa pods and have several seeds in one. I have no idea how easy they germinate but being a native TX tree I would think they don't need a cold spell. Oh, but they actually went thru one anyways on her ground, so I'd just throw them in some dirt.

Josephine, do you have a good picture of yours? You cut yours back yearly, right?

http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/2120/index.html

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes I do cut it back but not severely, just enough to keep it manageable and in good shape. Here is a link to one of my pictures on the plant files.

Do you want me to send an SASE? That is one beautiful Tree.

Ny yard is small due to all the trees, but I never stop planting. I have a golden rain tree, cassia, fruitless pomegranate, 14 or 15 pines, a native blooms not as pretty as red bud, 4 crepe myrtles, red leaf maple, 5 crepe myrtles that don't get really tall, 2 mimosa, 1 oak, 1 bay magnolia, 1 lavender vitex, 1 tulip magnolia, 2 sweet gum, and 2 china berry. And I need more? Not much sun left, but if there is a place as big as a postage stamp I will probably keep planting.

This doesn't count 7 huge pampas grass, the 4 Ligustrium, the boxwoods, brugs, Hibiscus, Candle tree, And 3 big double cream colored oleanders, 2 large double pink-peach oleanders, a single red large oleanders. Oh yes about 12 azealas, I will have to take pictures no one will believe how small my yard is. But I sure love it. When things bloom they take my breath away. I am sure I forgot something.

I haven't touched on Iris, daylily, bulbs, gosh I am an addict.
But I love it. No gatherings in my yard, no room.

Anyone want to drive over and take home some cuttings? Come on.
You all are welcome anytime.

:o)

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

Just D-mail me your address and I'll send you some. It sounds like you've got a great place! Any pictures of all these trees etc??

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

I will post some pictures later. I have some pretty ones. I don't have pictures of everything yet. Bet I could find some on the web.
I will be back on later.

Another of the fruitless pomegranate.

On all of my trees don't look great because I hurt my back in 1999 and had surgery in 2000. I got worce instead of better. So there is neglect on pruning.

Those are beautiful. It's wonderful to have trees with flowers on them!

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes it is, those are very nice pictures, thank you for showing them to us.
I hope your back gets better soon.
Josephine.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

I will be cutting back the oleanders when it gets warmer. And I have some small cassias or seeds, and I will be taking cuttings off the fruitless pomegranate. If anyone wants some then I will be glad to mail for postage.

As the rest bloom I will take pictures and post them.

My address is in the address exchange for some BOP seeds. I sure appreciate them.

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

I don't know where the address exchange is...help? Sorry, I rarely venture out of my few forums. lol

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Paige, go to the top bar and click on the home tab, then anoter bar will appear and on that bar there is a tab called, extras, click on that tab, and it will take you there.
Josephine.

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks Josephine...I was just looking thru there. I can't just look up an address tho. I think it might make me put mine in first. ? I didn't know that there was a member photo album either.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Paige you go there to the alphabet list, and click on the first letter of the persons name, in this casre I, that will show you all the names starting with an I, and when you find hers, click on it and it will show you her address, I guess it is a little complicated, but you will get there.
Josephine.

You have to add your info first - if you dont add your info you cannot see everyones info.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

Paige,

You have Dmail

Sorry I did not know you have to add yours first?? Doesn't seem to make sense if you are a paying member. But just my opinion. I can see not letting those who don't pay membership to get in.

Thank you sweetie.

Mitch, those are the oleanders I will being sending cuttings in the box I owe you. Hope you like the colors. I want to find the one that is a
dark almost burgandy red.

Blessings,
Sandy ^8^

Sandy -

They are all stunning - will I need to keep the cuttings in water or in soil to get them rooted? Dont you just love the plant- blooms in the heat of summer when most things are fading under our heat they just go nuts blooming their heads off.

Mitch

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

I do love it when they are blooming and all else is gone. It is a breath
of fresh air. Especially when I am not blooming so well in the heat.

I honestly don't know how to root them. If you find out first LMK. I was told water. These are probably one of those things that would love the bubbler. I tried one year just water and they did not do well. Never tried after that.

If anyone here knows let us know please.

Blessings,
Sandy ^8^

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

I know tha Sedrick/Syliva got one to root before so I will check into her method.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

Great because I am hoping to trade some. LMK

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

KK as to Big Lot's trees are very hard for me and some others here in North Florida to get to survive. Last night at dinner JaxFlaGardener remarked that those he had purchased there weren't guaranteed and weren't dormant, but dead.
Just a word of caution that I had to add.
Sidney

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks Sidney! That is one reason I have put off buying one. I don't know what those roots look like in that bag and I was wondering how it will get water while sitting there! I was figuring they didn't guarantee them and I'm leary of anything I can't return. I might wait a little longer and see if they have any and if they are blooming, or have any green buds appearing.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

KK - You can test the quick of the tree (scrape the bark with your fingernail) and see if it is green or brown under. I know people who have bought the trees there before (more then my free one!) they tend to be good if you test them and buy them early (they do not care for them at all.) Mitch

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes Mitch, you are right there too. I can't wait to see about the tree, because by then it could very well BE dead! Oh well, if I can't decide then I can wait.

I don't feel like doing anything outside today! I've got to go out this afternoon tho and cover plants! I hate the cold! bbbrrrrrr

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Mee too, Paige, but we knew it would most likely happen again, just hope there won't be too much damage.
