I wanted help from Texans. What roses do you find that grow and bloom well in our heat?
Thanks,
Julie
Texas roses
My favorite is Belinda's Dream. Beautiful color and strong grower. The individual blooms don't last long - about three days - but there are so many of them the display is spectacular.
Georgetown Tea and Mutabilis are my strongest, sturdiest roses. They both grow big!
Julie Are you familiar with the Earthkind rose program?
http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/earthkindrose/
It's a program that identifies the best roses for Texas.
No, I've never seen that link, but I'm gonna check it out right now. Thanks so much.
I am not a rose person as they are a bit finicky for me, but I do have 2 "Knock Out " roses that perform well with none of the normal rose diseases.
I agree with davegarden5 ~ I am not a rose person because of the work that they
require but this past summer I saw for the first time the 'knock out' roses and
I was impressed. So impressed that last week I bought me 4 of them. These
are my first ever rose bushes and looking forward to seeing them bloom.
I was told that they will take our summer heat better. I will post pics as soon
as mine begin to bloom. Good luck !!!

Be careful, that's how it starts, lol. http://davesgarden.com/journal/d/t/maggiemoo/16/
Absolutely, check out the Earthkind Rose link! I have heard Dr Steven George from A&M talking about them, it's very inspiring. (He will be at The Arbor Gate in Tomball on 3/11, with Gaye Hammond from the Houston Rose Society, and Mary Herr, Landscape Design Specialist, for the Arbor Gate's first annual rose festival: http://www.arborgate.com/classes.php ).
HA HA Maggiemoo, you saying I'm gonna eat my words??? ( : I am on vacation today and headed to Arbor Gate and some of the other regular hang outs. I am NOT gonna look at roses, or ONLY if one smells REALLY nice!!
Do you think you might go to Arbor Gate's rose festival? I plan to be there, as long as my mom and sister aren't here that weekend.
I love Belinda's Dream, too.
and.....
LaMarque
Lady Banks yellow (once blooming)
Martha Gonzales or Gonzalez
Pat Austin
Teasing Georgia
Mrs B R Cant
Duchesse de Brabant
probably a whole bunch more, but these are the ones that I can think of right now!
Maggiemoo, I will probably stop by, since Arbor Gate is just about 7 minutes from my house. I sure hope I don't buy any roses though ( :
Life w/out roses? Oh how sad.. They aren't work if you get the right ones. Look for noisettes and teas, chinas. These are the "graveyard" roses. They go unattended for decades. It don't get any easier than that. If you give them just a nod and a wink once in awhile, they will reward you w/dreams of heaven. I didn't like roses at all because all I had ever seen were those thorny, megahormoned box beauties you see at HD and the likes. That is Not a rose. That's a second job, with all the chemicals they require, you'd think Homeland Security would come a knockin. Look for the right ones, put some clematis growing up through them and you'll be hooked. Maggiemoo and Sylviatexas will attest to this.
hilary
Gosh. I am gonna nominate Hag49 as next year's Rose Bowl Queen! ( : I just bought a cheap-o jackmanni clematis at Lowes, and just as maggiemoo predicted, I may have to try JUST ONE rose ( : since I have the puny vine to grow up it. jackie
I'd follow Hilary's advice & go for a tea, china or noisette. If a rose can grow in an abandoned cemetery, you can grow it in your garden.
I have Belinda's Dream and it has done wonderfully. Had them in the ground a year this month. Got a tremendous amount of growth from them and they have never stopped blooming since the first bud opened.
I am trying the "Green Rose" just as a novelty (I am planning to have Clematis grow up through it for color). I put them in in the fall and have had probably a foot of growth on certain branches, so it looks like they will be a fast grower also.
I would definitely check the Antique Rose Emporium's website. They grow roses that are supposed to do well in our climate and are good about answering any questions that you have.
Belinda's Dream looks like an old-fashioned pink cabbage rose,
& it smells divine!
& a friend has The Green Rose:
she said it has bloomed all winter for her
(of course this friend has green thumbs up to her elbows!)
what color clematis with the gree rose? I bet that would be pretty cool and interesting
I got the Rosemoor Clematis (dark pinkish/red) since it is supposed to have an extremely long bloom time (Garden Gate said all summer long). The Clematis are still small, but have put out a quite a bit of new growth, so I am hopeful that I will get to see some of the effect this year. My Green Rose has bloomed all winter even with the bizarre weather we have had. I haven't watered, but maybe once and they are still growing well.
If it looks the way I hope, I will post pics after they get started.
As far as Belinda's Dream, my blooms are so big and there are so many of them that often times, they weigh down the branches. They do have a great fragrance.
JeanneTX, Your Belinda's Dream and mine look similar in size. Can't believe how much they have grown.
Jeanne,
Thanks for you pictures. I'm gonna go searching now for some of these wonderful suggestions.
Julie
