This may sound dumb, but how long does it take them to germinate? I got some mixed seeds from a fellow Dg'er, and it's been almost 4 weeks and nothing yet.

Maben, MS(Zone 7b)

I took the coating off, soaked them over night and it was only 4 to 5 days untill they were sprouting. I also keep them on a heat pad on low covered with a baggie.

If they are the seeds I sent , mine sprouted [ a few ] yesterday [ It took almost 5 weeks . ] .
I was going to toss them but then read somewhere it can take months . Gald I didn't toss now .
I quess it depends on what foot you are standing on when you plant them .
Maybe being in the mail they woke up , or were / weren't chilled or they went to sleep because of the country music I listen to . I know - I thought I'll keep the slow seeds and give away the fast ones .

Maben, MS(Zone 7b)

Tony, I proud you sent me the fast seeds. I'm going to tranfer them into their own little pots in a day or two and start feeding more.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 7a)

Ruth Hi they look great so fun to start from seeds.. like our children.... lol.... blessings..

Twyla

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Congrats Ruth! It looks like you have really dived into the brugs now. LOL

Maben, MS(Zone 7b)

Yes Cele I'm hooked, I don't know where I will put all the little ones and the cuttings I have rooted.

Union City, CA(Zone 9b)

I do have more seeds , enought for 2 or 3 people .
All I can say is I think it C H . it's yellow and came from a nursey with tag in pot / not on branch .
I have a frosted pink [ no name ] ,single white [ no name ] and a double white [ no name ] .
I think it is self pollinated but from what I have read it's not self fertal .

(Mary) Poway, CA(Zone 10a)

There are no ugly brug babies. They're all adorable, and every one capable of inspiring day dreams of marvelous blooms and sweet fragrance.

Savannah, GA(Zone 8b)

how long do you leave them on the heating mat, after they sprout? This is my first time with seeds.

Maben, MS(Zone 7b)

pp, I left them on the heating pad(on low) at night and days I sat them in a south window so they could bet sun light. I did this untill I repoted them in their own cups, then left them in the window all the time. I reposted them when they had their second set of leaves.

Hope this helps, might not be the right way but it worked for me.

Ruth

I just got some of Carol's Gold X planted 4 days ago.... I'm hopes I did all the right steps ~ will let you know as they progress! I am definitely hooked on these things. I think this will be the "Summer of Brug".

Sanna

Maben, MS(Zone 7b)

I sure hope it will be MY SUMMER OF BRUGS because I'm sure trying. LOL

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Your pics give me great hope! I planted my (peeled) seeds two weeks ago and my first three popped up yesterday. I have four different crosses germinating, my first time. Fingers tired of being crossed.

Okay, so which is the correct order: soak the seeds, then peel? OR Peel the seeds and then soak....

I did the first, and now am wondering if I did it correctly. I have more to go from another sharing person, so thought I'd get the right way next time???

I can hardly wait to see Carol's babies ~

Sanna

Maben, MS(Zone 7b)

Maybe someone that knows the correct way will post, I have read where some peel before soaking, others soak then peel and still others plant with out peeling.

Ruth

Huntsville, AL(Zone 7a)

I honestly think that whatever way works for you is the best way. If you have the seeds to experiment with, soak some first, then peel, then plant; peel some first, then soak, then plant; and with the third set, just plant them and see if there is any notable difference in germination time. But then, this is all coming from the mind of one whose failure rate with seeds is nearly total, so.....

Barb

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I agree, Barb. Everyone seems to perfect the best way for them. I always peel and never soak. I think brug seeds like brugs have a real instinct for survival and do well no matter what. I used to germinate them in wet paper towels then in plastic bags taped to the side of my computer.

I am new to using a heating pad. I needed one to root some plumies. But they do not have a thermastat. Should I go buy a thermastat for them? Anyone know??

Kittrell, NC(Zone 7b)

Kell, with my plumies, I put them in a damp paper towel, placed inside of a baggie, then taped to the side of my aquarium light. They sprouted in two days. Now I have 8 plumie babies alongside of brug babies. LOL!! My spare bedroom now smells just like a greenhouse and I just love it. Spring where are you?????

Savannah, GA(Zone 8b)

I haven't seen plummies growing anywhere except hawaii or Calif. Would love to try growing one. Do you have any suggestions where I could get a cutting or seeds?
Since I found DG, I am getting intrested in plants I never would have thought of. I have brug seeds, now I have ordered a heat mat and H202.
thanks,
Chris

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Chris, I have the same problem. Do not even look at the Tropical Forum! And the Rose Forum has gotten me in more trouble than any other one lately!! I bought a bunch pf plumies at HD this last summer. When they came in I rushed to about 5 of them to get the best ones. LOL.

Melanie, I am tryng to root multi headed plumies I bought months ago. Clare told me I couldn't root them without bottom heat, and I finally listened to her.

The thing is, when I touch the pad, it doesn't seem so warm so I am unclear if it is really doing the job. What does a thermastat do? Can it make it warmer?

Kittrell, NC(Zone 7b)

My understanding of a thermastat is it is just like a thermastat on your home heating or air....keeps the temperature even. I have used a regular heating pad on low, with a layer of towels in between the bottoms of the pots and the pad. Seems to work just fine for me.

Maben, MS(Zone 7b)

I have my seeds on a regular heating pad on low.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Well maybe mine is warm enough then. I hope so!!!

Lizella, GA(Zone 8a)

Welll, this is from Ms Cheeeeap... and don't know if everyone has "Big Lots" store.. but just bought heating pads for $7.88... cheaper than Walmart (and there is NO automatic shutoff).. Elaine just don't forget and turn them on high.... :))) LOL
