Was that Fibonacci dude on to something ?

Novato, CA

I admit, I’m fairly steeped in math and science.
Not so much from an academic perspective but mostly from curiosity and how it relates to garden design.

Sometime in the 13th century this dude named Fibonacci who had a fascination with patterns in nature figured out how a series of numbers worked out into a distinct sequence of repeating numbers which equated to spatial relationships.

This sequence of number has been called a variety of things over the years. Mathematicians call is Pi, theorists call it the Golden Rule of Numbers or Golden Proportion, amongst other things.

When I sit at my drafting table drawing up new design ideas for retaining walls, decks, patios, garden beds and flower borders I am not conscience of Fibonacci and his rule of numbers but somehow the proportions and the scale of what I come up with fit in perfectly with this mathematical calculations.

To me the balance of the proportions and scale just feel and look right to my eye.

When I look at my front yard flower borders, paths and lawn area I see Fibonacci’s theory of proportions and scale.
When I planned the garden out, I was not conscience of this, but somehow it just happened.

If you look toward your own garden spaces do they in anyway reflect the balance, proportion and scale that feels good to your eye, and does it fit in with Fibonacci’s sequence of numbers ?
Do you think that this simple ‘pattern’ could help you when planning out the layout of your garden space ?

Here is a link to a fun site on Fibonacci - http://www.textism.com/bucket/fib.html

If you do a google search with his name a bunch of other sites will pop up with info .
