Hello from 8b

Wow, just found this website this morning and joined it right away. My current obsessions are worm composting and butterfly gardening.

Welcome to Dave's from No. California... Great to see another worm composter here...

Welcome Kristen from Liz from Georgia. Noticed you like worm composting - you probably have found this already but there is a ongoing thread about worm composting under the soil and composting forum. Hit garden talk. Good Luck!

Welcome from a little south of you, --in Florida, --hope you enjoy the garden. --I use a heavy worm population to feed my organic material to my plants, I used to have worm beds but now just dump the material to be composted on the beds in the greenhouse and let the worms do their job in there, --Michael

Wow, you're lucky, Michael!! I don't have a greenhouse yet...but one day...........

My worms came this afternoon. My son and I were waiting out by the mailbox like it was Christmas morning. They are all nestled in their new home. I covered the top of the container with a comforter....it gets in the 50's to 40's at night....I know they'd rather be warmer than that. I actually thought of a heating pad....I guess that's going overboard....? I'll mention it on the other composting forum.

Thanks for the welcome everyone! I've never done any "chat'' like thing before. This is so cool! Here's a copy of the picure of my bin that I put on the other forum...... nothing fancy.

What kind of worms did you get?

Erwin, TN(Zone 7a)

I started out with Red Worms because they stay " home " better, but now that they are all loose in the greenhouse I have added all kinds form the bait stores, several kinds of Night crawlers and Blue Wigglers and who knows what else, --but any where you care to turn over some dirt it is full of worms---it works well for me---

It is a Daikon Radish, --I dont know if red wigglers are diferent from regular red manure worms [what we used to call them as a kid], --they were always to be found under cow pies when we wanted to go fishing---Later when I ordered them, they were called "Domesticated Red Worms" I was suprised to see the same red worms I had caught for fishing as a kid---

Hi, Kristen, welcome! I don't vermicompost anymore (I still do regular composting and just encourage the worms with compost and other amendments). But I'm really into butterflies, however! Theres a forum for butterflies and hummingbirds under the HOME TALK tab. I'm hoping eventually they'll have either a separate butterfly forum or a butterfly gardening forum! I'd like to see a lot more interest in butterflies here because they're so awesome to have around or raise.

Do the birds eat many of your caterpillars? I'm worried about that.
