The trick to bidding is to wait until the last day so as to not drive the prices too high until the last minute. Instead, bidders get in a bidding war trying to stay the top bidder for no reason.
Sellers love bidding wars but it doesn't help the buying trying to get a good price.

I've had many a plant snatched out from under me within the last 60 seconds. If you really want it, you've got to really watch out for those last second thieves. :D

That's true and I have done my share of sniping but I seldom ever bid on anything until the last day. I mark it and keep track of it.
There is a program called auction sniper....It puts your bids in the last 30 seconds of an auction.
I believe that is how people manage to snatch it up like that

Yes they do pay extra. If I'm around when the auction is due to end,
I open up 2 windows. In one window, I set up the price I am willing to spend and set it where you just click to bid. On the other window,
I keep it on the first page of the auction where I can keep refreshing to following the bidding and time. when the time left gets down to under 1 minute, I flip back to the other screen and click enter. The trick is to not allow enough time for another bidder to counter a bid.
The sniper programs work the same way but do it automatically up to the max bid you enter and you don't have to be there. Not worth the extra money for me. If I want something bad enough, I make sure I'm there at closing time.

I know that trick to bidding, but I will tell you a sad story. So sad that it will make you want to cry. Once there was this woman who had been bidding on ebay for a set of pyrex bowls that were just like her mother had when she was a little girl. They were in great shape and the site of them brought back fond memories and general good feelings. She bid several times and checked the status each day. She had been the highest bidder for the last 3 days of the auction. The winning bid was a fair bid. The last day came, the last hour came, the last 30 minutes and the auction was 30 SECONDS FROM BEING OVER, 30 SECONDS! And as she starred at the screen her happiness turned into disbelief, disappointment and then anger because some creep popped in at the last moment and out bid her by $1.00- just one buck and though she tried, she didn't have time to counter bid. It was very sad and after that she became a serial murderer! LOL- ok the last part is not true, but dang it I was mad!
You just need to play the same game if it's something you really want and are willing to pay the price. The price would not have gone nearly as high as it did if there had not been bidding the previous days leading up to the auction end. All sellers depend on the ignorance of bidders to raise the ending prices on thier items. I do sell and look forward to them. On other items, like seeds and plants, you can look at the seller's history to see if they offer those particular ones on a regular basis. If so, they you can bid up to the amount you are willing to pay and stop there. If you are outbid, wait to see if the seller posts more. It's a chance whether they will or not but you can save if you're willing to take a chance.
I was so hoping that the seller of that Pow Wow plant would list another, but so far not. I do keep looking and I know that I should not bid until the last day, but sometimes I just get so antsy and want somthing so bad, I am just like a kid in a candy store.
Don't feel bad. I was the one who won it but I'm fighting now to get it.
I paid on the 19th thru paypal and he emailed me last Friday that he was on the way to the post office with it that afternoon. I have yet to receive it or the other 2 coming with it.

I sent a blooming Blue Dragon to Lorry she got it yesterday ! I'm not just braggingg but I feel her new plant looks better than the big priced one ! I also have leaves down. So if you don't feel like paying big Ebay bucks, or buying from a Vendor there will be planty of babies of Blue Dragon here :))
Kenton is an aweseom grower . He has only had his leaves little than less 2 months and his babies are growing so well. And his plants are beath taking :))

Today I just got a printed out catalog and she does have Blue Dragon ! Last October or so I got around 14 plants from her and each and everyone was blooming size and healthy ! At the time I think they were all about $4.75 each :)) Some plants had a couple plants in the pot I like this :)) I have been able to share lots of leaves from them, put down leaves and shared some of the doubles ! And I have been enjoying the non-stop blooming plants :))

I looked this morning and lots and lots of AVs were going for high prices- I don't really understand why, yes they are pretty and sometimes I am childish and I want what I want when I want it... but really some of these prices seem a bit absurd, better to buy from the nurseries we know or those that are recommended, and trade amongst ourselves.
Pow Wow of course could be my exception. If current plans don't work out may have to strike a deal w/ the devil! LOL
Well, I'm still waiting for my Pow Wow and the 2 others from Ebay. I finally had to file a complaint against the seller. He emailed a week ago Friday and said he was mailing it that day. He refused to answer any more emails. The post office must have been in China because I haven't received them yet.

I swear I have a stalker in the african violet section on eBay. If I bid on a plant, you can almost guarantee the same person will outbid me. I'm very frustrated, too. I know that's the game on eBay, but when it's always the same person . . . Grrrrr!

I just don't think I would feel good about paying that much for an AV- not that I don't love them and want them, but come on, and I know that it would be my luck that I'd kill it. I have sort of a rule of thumb for my outdoor plants, if I pay 20.00 or less and it doesn't work it's not so bad, just 20 buck, but beyond that I have to think a bit harder because more than 20.00 seems a bit much to throw out the window.
Yes what if it dies. Some come to small to put leaves down for insurance and everyone knows sometimes the leaves don't root. This has happened to everyone ! Yes I'd be afraid even if I was mighty rich

Yeah I guess, but as you said in another post, most of these could be bought from vendors and even if you bought from Rob's and paid his outrageous shipping you'd still come out ahead of the game!
As for me, I have lost/killed enough plants in my lifetime to not want to take the risk.
Oh goodness yes and Violet Gallery sells Blue Dagon and hundreds more and all the plants I bought from them were good size most blooming andhave never stopped !
