Purple Sage

Perris, CA(Zone 9a)

The introduction says that plants attracting butterflies and hummingbirds are discussed in this forum also. Anyway, I would like to ask a question about Salvia Leucophylla or Purple Sage. I won my plant in a plant raffle at a gardening seminar for locals in October 2004. The facilitator told me that for the first year, the Purple Sage had to be cut down to six inches. In the Spring of 2005, the plant did not bloom. I did not prune the plant all of 2005. If I pruned the salvia this Spring 2006 would it still bloom? I have only kept the plant to attract butterflies to the flowers although the foilage is beautiful.

I'd ask this in the Perennial forum, CBernard. Perhaps you'll get an answer there. :)

I have this plant although it is the dwarf form and have never pruned it. This will be its 2nd year. Last year was very dry but, I did not baby it and its doing great. The few times it did rain it bloomed profusely. I think I love this plant!

John,

Thanks a lot for the link. It showed me what I should expect from the Purple Sage plant that I have. However, it has already rained twice and so far still no blooms. I am thinking that I will transplant the plant to another part of the yard, although still not full sun. It presently is on the north side of a fence. The empty space this creates I could use for more California Buckwheats and monardellas.

Thanks again,

Chuck
