The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Here's a few nursery pics of my babies & some leaf pics too.

I've been having a dickens of a time getting on so I haven't been posting but I'm out here keeping up.:)

The first pic is the way I grow some of my mini leaves.

My goodness. They look so cozy and content. How do you keep them from overheating? They look brilliant; grand variegation.

Hiya James... nice to see someone else still up these hours..lol

I grow these down on the bottom shelf of one of my stands in a cooler room. They seem to like the warmer temps esp. since it's a humid enviroment. Since they are just babies, I guess that's the reason it works.
I loose very few mini leaves this way,but when I try to grow them in the open I always loose a lot??

It works for be- headed crown cuttings of my trailers, too.
I'll post a few pics of those maybe tomorrow...

Great pictures MsC.

Hi MsC,
Do you ever open the tops of your containers or just leave them closed?

Great pictures. You have the touch lady. :0)

I open the containers every once in a while to check for babies and remove any dead leaves . It is almost fool proof for me and works realy well for those tiny leaf varieties. I use a mixture of AV soil and chopped sphagnum moss to root them. I even have half of a small leaf that has rooted and looks to be putting up babies, too.

I like it because I don't have to remember to water them and for lil trailers you can just leave them in the container and cut the clear top off.

If you have trouble getting the tiny leaves to stay alive & make babies, then you might give it a try too.

MsC,
I've been lurking around this forum for a while but not posting much, but I have to ask where you get your containers (first post) to start leaves.
I've had AVs for years but recently they started dying one at a time - finally figured out the tree outside had gotten too big and there wasn't enough light :-) DUH I am trying to start some leaves that I liberated from my mom and MIL.
Thanks for any info you can share.

Sharon,
My hubby brings them home from the caferteria at work.lol
He gets deserts in them & I just wash them out.

You can look at fast food places for them ,take out type food or salad containers work great.

You could probable use the CLEAR rectangled disposable sandwich containers . I use clear candy jsrs cookie jars etc too.
They are cheap and make great terrarium type containers for all the leaves & plants I grow.

I'll try to post some of the different ones I use to give you an idea of what you can look for.

MsC...great pics and great looking plants. The ones you have in the containers with the lids...I can't figure out why they don't rot with all the moisture. Do you water them on a regular basis, or do they produce the moisture on their own? I just may have to try some of the containers with the lids.

Good work :)

Deb, when I use containers with lids like that, I poke a bunch of ventillation holes in the plastic, and that seems to create a humidity level that's perfect for me. A metal kebab skewer heated on the stove or a cheap soldering iron will put nice little holes (no cracking) through a whole stack of plastic containers or lids.

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Hiya Deb,
Well... I start out with the potting meduim just moist. It has a lot of shredded spahgnum moss in it which has a bit of natural anitfungus properties. After the leaves are set down in the mix I just close the containers and set them under my lights,I never water them again unless I see I didn't close the container tight enough. When I get ready to either transplant them or they grow so big they are pressing against the top, then I start leaveiing the top partially open . That is when you have to start checking the water/moisture content. The containers are fairly shallow so they can fry out really fast. Most of the time I poke a hole in the bottom of the container and poke a string up inside so that I can wick water(no fertilizer) them for a while.
I rarely have any problems with rot or failed leaves.
I've done the smae thing with cuttings of Episcias this way too.

Try it ~ It might work for you, too.

What a great idea! So far I am still taking a wait and see attitude w/ the common way and have lost a couple of leaves. Perhaps your way would work for me, I think I over water them. I can see it now, "Woman steals dessert containers from local cafeteria, the only clue is an African Violet leaf left behind...details at 10:00." LOL

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

LOL... yes that would be funny!
April, since our climates are very similar you might give it a try. I'm going to post a few of the not so glamorous terrarium type containers I use...it just gives you some different idea's to try . I have these lil terrarium containers everywhere...not exactly house beautiful but we tend to be very laid back kinda folks..lol

I'll put them on a new thread as soon as I get them togehter.
