"Blooming Hoyas" - the series.......

London, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Hi everyone, how about if each month we recorded details of those hoyas that have been in bloom for us? At the end of each month for the rest of this year, I'll ask you for your information. I can group the results roughly according to climate, so that hopefully it should eventually provide a reference of when we can expect our hoyas to bloom, according to the type of climate we each have. What do you think?

Matt

League City, TX(Zone 9a)

Hopefully the buds I have found on my hoya will mature into blooms and I will actually have something to report!

Susan

LOL at Susan...

Yes, that is a great idea. I think it is important to also note wheather they are kept outside year round or inside bloomers.
I had my lasiantha just bloom and a lacunosa (1 flower) in the house here, but the many I have outside are completely dormate (not growing or blooming...just in a holding patern).
I know many that keep theirs inside year round get blooms all different times.
Marcy

London, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Yes, good idea Marcy. We can do outside or inside too.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

OK...great Idea!!!

Philippines (IML 831) H. siariae, H. finlaysonii, H. parviflora, H. sp. Sulawesi. 3 Dischidia are blooming and 2 Dischidiopsis. H. cv. Christine is making lots of umbels as is H. pachychlada.

Carol

Edited to add more blooms and to say we hit 80 today and the sun came out. YAY. We were getting tons of rain.

Edited again because I found flowers on H. pusilla and H. pentaphlebia - OUTSIDE.

Well, here it has been running in the 60s for the high daytimes and down to 40 at night. It is those low nightime temps that have put mine in a "no grow" mode.
Hey...also of interest...my neice lives in Alpine, Calif. (up in the hills more), and the hoyas I gave here are all living outside (on a covered patio). She has had 3 nights that got down to 29 degrees and all of them are still doing OK. The ones she has are several australis types, some carnosa and pubicalyx cvs, and a bella. I am totally surprized they are still living. She said she didn't realize it had got THAT cold, but when I checked her wheather reports for the month, that is what it said. YIKES!
Love these HARDY hoyas!
Marcy (in S. Calif.)

Thats a great idea, Matt. Do you want us to list our bloomers here on this thread?
Mark

London, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Yes please Mark; Carol has got us off to a great start already on this thread. Also, if those of you who do grow them outdoors as well as indoors, could list them in the same way that Carol has, that would be great!

Once all the monthly info is in, I'll summarise it and relay it back to you. It should become more and more interesting as each month's bloomers are added.

I'm really looking forward to this! Hope we come up with lots of useful information.

Matt

San Francisco, CA

last month inside:

australis ssp. australis
australis x subcalva
lacunosa

Indoor temps last month ranged from upper 50's (near open windows) to around 74 degrees.

I think I am one of the unusual people on the forum who doesn't repot the EA hoyas I have purchased in the past and they seem to do well for me. I live in the Chicagoland area, and although we are having a very mild winter, my hoyas are definitely inside all the time. The two that have never really stopped blooming since fall are my EA H.lacunosa and EA H.incurvula or brevialata. I am getting buds on my australis also.

Greenhouse blooming:
cv Christine
Tsangii
Multiflora aka Shooting Star
Inside blooming:
bella - under grow lights

Chowchilla, CA(Zone 10a)

Say... Would those who grow them under grow-lights make a note of that?
Thanks!
Ann

London, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Hi Ann,

Yes, FL's do have a positive effect on growth and flowering, (depending on their strength) regardless of month or season, and so the hoyas flowering under them should be grouped separately. To do so would'nt make summarising the results more complicated in any way.(- I'll be posting details of this shortly). Thanks for that.
Matt

Los Angeles, CA(Zone 9a)

Wow, fantastic idea! I'm really hoping I can add to this list! My shooting star is forming buds, pink silver, and cv. Noelle. However, mine are near a west facing window, with FL lights over them. Does this count?
Heather

London, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Hi Heather,
Glad you like the idea! Yes, just list any flowering plants that are under lights separately.
Take care,
Matt

The only bloomers I have right now are under my jeans :(

Karen I think that's a bit more infomation than we need to know:-).

Well I just saw this thread. I am out of town but will be back home on Tues. night. Will see what mine are doing and report. But I am so glad this thread was started. I know it will sure help me. Thanks Matt :))))))

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

I noticed H. calycina has big happy buds, both in the GH and out under the tree.

Seguin, TX(Zone 8b)

Well this is fun! Let's see...right now I have H. fungii, H. lacunosa, and H. davidcummingi blooming. And H. sheperdii and H. obscura are full of buds. It's been staying around 65-70 in here this winter, and most of these are around east or south facing windows, except for the fungii which is hanging near my lightstand in the corner. They seem to like being in TX!

Kim

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Boy....I'll say! My shepherdii doesn't start blooming until later in the summer...at least it did last year.... Doncha love it?

Seguin, TX(Zone 8b)

Oh I do, I do! This plant had buds when I moved, but then blasted them after the trip down here. I am very happy to see it budding up again! It's a good sized plant, and it must have at least 15 peduncles right now. I actually had this one out in the little greenhouse until the middle of december. I let the temps get down around 45, but one night the heater didn't kick on and it got down to 38. Didn't bother this one or the H. kerrii var or H. pubicalyx I had in there with it. It did get a little sunburnt though (I still can't believe the intensity of the sun here) but recovered nicely.

Kim

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

I planted a cumingiana out in full sun and it is about to bloom....3 months before her sisters. Summer may cook it, tho'.

Okay, I though that H. Nummularioides was a fall blooming hoya??? Well, mine bloomed from Sept thru November, and they (both plants) are now blooming again! Is this normal, or do I have something strange going on here in Chicagoland? They are in a south east facing window, no florescents....

London, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Carol, I'll include these in the Feb list. Thanks. Do you have any pics of these? It would be great to see them.

Matt

Okay, blooms here right now are not many - for once! Only caudata, tsangii/DS-70, carnosa, bella, australis, shepherdii and picta. BUT, judging by all the buds here and there March will be a REALLY good bloom month!

Picture of H. pubicalyx in the Winter Apple tree (the deep magenta blooms in the background...they bloom on the trunk of the tree and are really a sight when they are out in full).

Here is pubicalyx growing up a Palm Tree in full sun. The leaves look awful but it NEVER stops blooming all Spring and Summer.

Really breath taking pictures Carol. You are so lucky to live in the tropics. Sniff Sniff I need some humidity.....

My carnosa just snuck in under the February wire, and started opening today. Here it is in opening up mode, with another umbel to follow in about a week or so. Altogether it has five umbels right now in varying sizes.

Christine...HOW WONDERFUL!!!! H. carnosa may be one of the oldtimers, but she is really really hard to bloom.... SOUNDS LIKE SHE LOVES YOU!!!!

GREAT job!!!
Carol

Thanks Carol. It's momma (my viery first hoya, about 25 years ago) was a monster bloomer too, and always started its first blooming cycle of the year in February. So, she's right on schedule this year to give me a nice case of "hoya happies".

Christine ~~ VERY pretty!

Way to go Christine!

Thanks Betsy and Susan.

London, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Hi everyone - apologies for being out of contact. Glad to be back online again!! It's great that you have been submitting the details of plants in bloom for February. If there are any others who would like to contribute details of the hoyas they had in bloom in February that would be great! I'll wait a few more days before summarising the details. After seeing Carol's amazing pictures of her H. pubicalyx in bloom, lets make it a regular feature to add some photos of the plants in flower, as well as posting the details each month.
Take care
Matt
