It wouldn't even survive one day in south Texas! It looks like ice!

in Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

You are so right Calalily. It would die even in our full shade here. It is beautiful .

So pretty! I really like white and green plants. What is that variegated behind it? A ginger?

New Madison, OH(Zone 5a)

Very cool plant!!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Thanks all,yep thats a varigated ginger, and yes,I'm so afraid to touch the leaves, afraid it will turn brown.
Reminds me of stuggard canna,it's leaves would turn brown even if I looked at it!!!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I have tried for that ginger twice now. First order came all broken and died soon. The second order was so covered in whitefly and eggs, I immediately tossed it. I decided it was not meant to be!! I will admire yours from a far.

I have no dieffenbachia right now, but I do love them. They sure have some great leafed ones now.

Nice one!

Dieffenbachias - can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em.

The smaller leaved ones are so sensitive.....they grow beautifully for a while and then 'flop over'!! Frustrating!

I've been looking for R. Roehrs, myself....have you ever seen it available?

I've seen a few that look like they *might* be it....but, of course, they're always unidentified.

Do you have D. 'Octopus'?
It's a large-leaved one, and a pretty good grower!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Kell,it too has been a difficult one to grow, very slow grower,no flowers as of yet,I too admire it from a far!LOL
Nan,no I haven't seen octopus,nor have I seen Roehrs yet available.
Dieff, used to be quite available a few years back, don't see them much anymore, around here.might have to go online and look for them there.
I perfer the large leaf ones, much stronger and easier to grow.

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

I bought my first dieffenbachia tonight. Well, not first in my life, but the one I had (and killed) as a freshman in college doesn't count. LOL.

I'm trying to ID it, and since I bought it at Walmart for $3, I'm guessing it's Dieffenbachia compacta. It looks really healthy and has new growth, so hopefully I've learned a thing or two in the last 31 years!

Here's another picture, showing its size better.

Oh, and by the way, Tropicman, I love your new one. It was actually this thread that made me want to buy a dieff.... :-)

I wonder if your new dieffenbachia will be slow to grow too Tropicman because of so much white and so little green (chlorophyll) that plant has to feed it self.

Such a deal for $3, Kylee. Did that pot come with it?? It looks so nice.

On the Rose Forum today, Vossner was saying she had bought tree roses for $15. at Walmart. That is so inexpensive compared to even HD ($29) and Costco ($21)!! I have got to start hanging out at the Walmart here! LOL

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

Thanks kell, but no, the pot didn't come with it, but I got it for a song, too, at Marshall's. $4. This was the only dieffenbachia like that they had for $3, but they had several of the whiter ones for that. We decided we liked the more variegated one better. Of course, for $3, I could have bought both! LOL.

There is such a difference between the two Walmarts we go to when it comes to plants and they're only 30 miles apart. That's a good thing, though. More variety.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

You are a great shopper!

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

I've heard that before. LOL. My mom always says, "Kylee will spend every dollar she makes, but she will get the most for her dollar." LOLOL.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

This one I believe is called Stars,I've had for about 3 yrs,I thought was named Exotica, but can't seem to find the tag,was a little 2 inch pot single stem, when I bought it,now mutlistemmed plant, and 3ft tall.
I think it has grown about slow to medium, but that may be from the more white than green, also might be because of the hybrid vareity.

Oooooh, pretty, Tropicman!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I love that one too. You could fill your house with beautiful dieffenbachia. One is better than the last. Oh dear.............

Brookshire, TX(Zone 8b)

This was 1 of 4 plants in a 10" pot sent to me from a Florist by my brother & sister in January, 2006, I have repotted to 6" each & now to 10" each.

Looks great!
What ever your doing, keep doing it!!!
Mine too is grower leaps and bounds,I hate to up pot it,but it needs it badly,on vacation
in 2 weeks ,hope to get it done then.

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

Hey, Don...how's your D. 'Octopus' doing?
Did you ever find a D. Rudolph Roehrs?

Nice plant, servicegenie! Curious...approximately what size is your largest leaf?

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

No not yet!
Putting on it's fourth leaf, looks like it might be a little taller as well, growing good!!!
Hope your nana is growing!!!

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

That R. Roehrs is elusive, isn't it?

Glad to hear the Dieff. is doing well!

The nanner's growing nicely, too.
Took it's time, but when the heat and humidity kicked in....it really started to take off!

Thanks again!

I have dieffenbacia's and never had a problem with them. I f you water too much the leaves will wilt and fall off. When they get leggy I just cut them off and throw the cutting out in the yard and they will sprout and grow another plant. Sounds like I am bragging huh? No, Not so. Never knew anyone had a problem raising them but they like shade and dont like the sun othewise they are easy to grow in the summer. I will send anyone a cutting for the postage but I only have one plant so it will have to be just a few right now. I have had some leaves that were white and then the others are different. Fran

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

Fran...do you know which type it is?
Is it one of the larger types or the 'dwarf' ones?
You wouldn't have a photo of it by chance, would you?

If it's a larger grower, I would *love* to reimburse you postage for a cutting, but the smaller types are just too sensitive for me!

Growing indoors just can't measure up to growing outdoors in Florida...if I threw a piece out in the yard anywhere from September to mid-May....she'd be frosted or frozen!

Brookshire, TX(Zone 8b)

Nan ask:
"Nice plant, servicegenie! Curious...approximately what size is your largest leaf?"
My largest leaf turned yellow & dropped off, the top 2 now are 12" long, 7" wide (Not counting the stalk up from the pot).
Originally (1-26-2006) the whole plant was 6 to 8 inches tall.
Here are the 4 that came originally from the florist.
