Thank you!
I started gathering them when I decided my courtyard would be a home to hummingbirds. They love them. This one is my favorite.

Kell, are these propagated by seed or cuttings?

Blenheim, New Zealand

I do have others. but it is the shape of it,, it is a species so should set seed. maybe a cross or too could come out of it??

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I have done some by cuttings Betty but never by seed.

So bootandall, only the species set seed? The hybrids don't?

Blenheim, New Zealand

I have not had any luck with self collected hybrid seeds, for me the species are easier!

Some day when I have time I will try! It would be fun to make your own crosses! I still have hummers visiting mine daily and it it is getting so cold out there at night.

Kell: I've just caught this thread and have been wanting to try some abutilon for a while. Your `Veronica' is so lovely, but I'm wondering, do you have it in a pot and bring it in for winter? I know it's only hardy to like zone 9, so if I had one in a pot, I could bring it inside. How did yours make it over the winter of 06/07?

Wow, a 3-year old thread brought back to life. I bought one in a pot and loved it, but it died. I guess I don't know enough about them either. They do take some shade, don't they?

I am lucky here in that they do great outside planted in the ground. They do not even care if they get frosted a bit or even more than a bit. LOL. In the ground they will grow quite large though, I am forever trimming them back.

I do have some in pots but I notice I do not do well long term in those. I may water too much. In the ground I so neglect them. A friend has one in a huge clay pot and it is a little tree about 6 feet tall and 6 feet round. It is so well branched and obviously old. So they can be grown in pots quite well!

Betty, here I have them in full sun and part shade but I am cool in the summer rarely getting over 76 degrees.

Thanks, Kell. I'm not sure they would do well in our summer heat/humidity, but I'm going to try it.

Kell, I stand a chance then because I have cool summers too, rarely over 80 deg.
Thanks for the advice.

Woods, I hope yours do well. Please let us know at the end of the season!

I will if I can get one. Are you coming to the Southern Appalachian Round-up?

Kannapolis, NC

I'm planning to attend and hoping no emergencies arise to prevent that! I have already signed up for a couple of vacation days for earlier that week.
