Hi dmj......
I just bought one of these and have it in the yard....do you know if it likes full sun? How big does yours get?
Thank you
Connie

Mine got nipped to ground level this winter but survived. For me, its in full sun and gets about 5' tall and about 3' around. Seems to bloom abit better for me fall, winter, and spring....less so in summer. That's OK with me, little else is blooming when it does. Took me forever to identify this plant.

Thank you! I rescued mine from Lowes, half dead....is doing nicely now.

Hi, DMJ --

I recently bought a Rondeletia splendens and it doesn't resemble your plant at all. The flowers and foliage are quite different. Is it possible that yours is Rondeletia leucophylla?

Mine was ID'd by the plantFile guru's.

my Rondeletia leucophylla looks exactly like the one pictured.

I believe you folks are correct. I was going by what the folks on the ID forum kept telling me it was--even though I told them it did not look like all the plants that were pictured. Can we easily get the phot moved or will it require an act of Congress? lol

Hi, DMJ. I contacted Baa, so I think she'll be kind enough to move the photo to the right page.

I sympathize with your experience in the ID forum. Before I finally got the correct ID, a lot of people kept telling me my Rondeletia was a Mandevilla or a Brunfelsia.

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Well a Mandevilla is pretty far off-lol. I did find out its a Mexican native, and I had noted mine bloomed Dec-April and was taller than their parameters.

Oh well, the PlantFile editors already think I'm pretty stupid so here is another nail in my coffin to them.

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

I'm sure they don't. You've contributed so much.

I bought my Rondeletia at a plant sale at the S.F. Arboretum and it was marked "jasminum." I had never seen a Jasmine with red flowers, so that's why I went to the ID forum for help.

What's the gorgeous plant on the right-hand side of the photo at the bottom of your personal DG page? It's just beautiful.

And they've criticized a great deal of my work too. Baa hasn't though....it should be noted.

That's a very large rangoon creeper. Another must have plant if you don't have it. The most intoxicating floral scent on the planet, in my opinion. Thanks for noticing it, its a personal favorite of mine.

Well, I think Baa is the nicest and most polite of that whole bunch, so I'm not surprised.

The rangoon creeper most certainly is a must-have plant and I will get one. Thanks a lot.

i'm so glad you two got this figured out. just a note to add that i had a Rangoon Creeper in the keys and it didn't fair well in the salt air/water. i didn't think it would survive here in zone 9 so i didn't bring any with me when i moved up here. now i've found (and have read) that it will survive even a light frost. there is a huge one across the street from me, placed on a south-facing garage and has protection from an enormous live oak. i am going to take cuttings. i agree with you, debbie, that it is a very special must-have plant. debi

Oh yes--they will survive a hard freeze too but the key is very deep mulch (for rangoon creeper).

thanks! i'll remember that. i hope we don't get any hard freezes here, but they do happen once in a great while.

Hey there.. I have found this plant at our local wal-mart.. I'm just North East of Atlanta in 7B and yes we have freezes. I haven't purchased it yet.. But wanted to know, do you think I would need to take cuttings and root them indoors over winter if I wanted to keep it, ( I probably wouldn't be able to!) or do you think it would come back if very heavily mulched? I have tropical Brugmansias and they do return for me each year. It is a beauty but I knew to look it up before I brought it home.. I kind of appreciate that fact that someone at wal-mart is clueless about plants and zones :) The tag said "Panama rose" and the pictures are the same. :)

It froze this year here--and if I had not taken cuttings--I would have it no more. The only thing I dislike about this plant is it really only blooms extremely late fall or early winter here.

Marietta, GA(Zone 7b)

Thanks.. I guess I'll pass on it :)

the one across the street from me took a big frost hit this winter. it was just one night, but it did a lot of damage. i thought sure the creeper was dead, but it is finally leafing out. i think i won't take any cuttings. it's a lot of trouble for a plant that blooms sporadically and needs protection.
