Plumeria cuttings

Union City, CA(Zone 9b)

Yesterday Wallmart had some cuttings , one Plumeria cutting and something else for $5.99 .
Plumeria cutting showed a red flower and other plant had yellow flowers .

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

wow, I've never seen plumeria cuttings at WM.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Wonderful! That's a great deal!

When you say 'showed a red flower' was this a picture with the cutting, or a flower on the cutting?

Union City, CA(Zone 9b)

looked like a plant with flower

I'm assuming it was a rooted cutting then. Great find!!

Kittrell, NC(Zone 7b)

Wished they carried those at our WM!!

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

Walmart and HD are so diverse in what they stock according to area.
We never see any plumies or large bags of perlite in the NEUSA

Mesilla Park, NM

The walmart here also has them. The other plant included in there looks like a pencil cactus, but I'm sure it isn't. The cuttings are not rooted, but that is a good buy, you get two plants. They also had orchids in one of the varieties here at this walmart. The label says "Plants from Hawaii" something to that effect.

Neat! Hi Antoinette! It's good to see you here! How are your plumies doing?

Mesilla Park, NM

Hi Clare,
They are doing great. Several of the cuttings went dormant, but they are still outside, some have leaves. The seedlings all have leaves and are outside in a protected area. They are looking good.

How are your babies? Have any bloomed for you this winter?

I'm not sure where these here are going to be planted, my yard is so diverse (alot of cactus) and palm trees, vines,.. looks like a desert oasis and at the other end "a Jungle".. it will be awhile before any of the plumies go into the ground, maybe by then I'll have some kind of plan hopefully.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Hi Antoinette, your place is great! Do you get frost in your area? If you do, you may want to consider keeping them in containers if you get an occasional frost every couple of years. Frost will turn plumies to mush.

Mine are doing great and are outside too, and they all have leaves too. I had a bad mite infestation in the fall so I removed most of the leaves and have been spraying the ones that are left, but new ones grew in right away. So far, the leaves look pretty good. I put most of the ones with inflo's inside the portable greenhouse, and rooting cuttings are in there too. I've had some blooms in there including Sariah's Curly Pink and a white that I think is Samoan Fluff, and today, Gulf Stream opened. I've got inflo's on Hurricane, Intense Rainbow, Pacific Pearl, Phet Rada, some unknowns, some seedlings, and some others that I can't remember now. Here is Gulf Stream below. Did you see my articles at www.plumerias.com I wrote two, and you can download them by clicking on the pdf sign.

WOW, you have done a fantastic job, not only in expression, but as a whole. Congrats. I love it. going to try and download it after I am done reading it again. now.

Thanks, Antoinette. That is really kind of you to say. I appreciate that and am really glad that you like it. That means a lot to me.

Clare - I actually found those articles a week ago while doing a search on Plumeria care. I'm awaiting the arrival of a Duke Plumeria & Miami Rose - rec'd my Kona Rainbow yesterday. Your writings were SO informative esp to us newbies!!
I actually printed out a couple of articles - did you reference in a Q & A a certain type of soil at Lowes and "no" to clay pots? One more question - if I can't find a rooting stimulator that contains a Fungicide could you spray it with something like Garden Safe's 3 in1 fungicide? I just want to give my guys the best start I can.
Many thanks!!
Chantell

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

Hi Chantell,
Sounds like youre off to a great start!
You can 'add' a fungicide
If its a liquid spray let it dry completely before you put it in the soil.
Welcome and good luck!!

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I love 3-in-1! use it for a lot of stuff. available at WM, DH, lowes. About $5 for a spray bottle.

Ah vossner - glad to see you other in "this" forum as well...gotta love the plants known for fragrance eh? Malestrom - thank you, thank you...so I dip them in the rooting hormone...let dry...spray on fungicide...let dry....PLANT. Did I get that right? Leave it to me to complicate the uncomplicated. LOL

Hi Chantell! Duke and Miami Rose are lovely plumies, and Kona Rainbow sounds lovely too! I haven't been able to get much of a fragrance from Duke, but Miami Rose is a strong coconut suntan oil fragrance that I love.

Thanks so much for the compliment about the articles I wrote. I am so glad that it was helpful. It was fun to share about what I do when I grow them. About the soil, I just mentioned that I use a really well-draining soil. Any good potting soil will do, but often commercial potting mixes stay too moist so, if you can add pumice or cactus mix or perlite to the mix, that will make it better draining. When I can't get Sunshine Gro Mix #4, I usually just opt for MiracleGro and add Perlite to it. Clay pots are nice because they drain well and breathe well, but I find that they dry out much too quickly for plumerias and that the roots cling to the side of the pots and break when being transplanted so I use clay pots for epiphyllums and plastic pots for plumerias.

I use 3-in-1 all the time too, and it works just fine. I would spray with the fungicide and let it dry like Michael said. Then you can dip in the rooting hormone powder and plant. I use Roottone or Hormex, and I don't think either one of those has a fungicide either.

Here my Duke from last year. This year, it has an inflo that is about to open any time now.

Clare - you are wonderful - THANKS to ALL of you for your helpful hints! These beauties will thrive/survive, I'm committed to it!! :) Clare - I have to say I was disappointed in hearing your thoughts on Duke's frangrance...THAT'S exactly why I purchased it was b/c of what I'd heard of it's fragrance being a strong sweet/spicy smell. :( Which Plumeria(s) would you rec. for that type of smell? I'm not really interested in the fruity/citrus smelling ones...not yet at least. LOL

Spicy smelling plumeria are: India and Grove Farm. I would not be without those two!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Dutchlady, are you Hetty? If so you're holding that Miami Rose and looking for the White Gardenia frangrance ones for me. Big hello to you - you've been SO helpful!! India and Grove Farm eh? Not sure what colors they are...btw if you come across any of those - please let me know. My ebay name is RdAngel07.

Clare, The soil I'd read rec. was Lowes Sta-green all purpose potting mix (ingrediants show: "composted forest materials, sphagnum peatmoss, perlite, ground dolomitic limestone, time release fertilizer) with AquaGuard. I also have both pumice and perlite - should I add one or both to the soil I bought?

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Hi Chantell! You are so sweet! Thanks for being so nice. Don't give up on Duke. I've only had it a short time, and it only bloomed the one time last year, and so maybe it was the conditions that I had it in that made it smell mild and not that appealing. My Duke is going to bloom again this spring so I will give you an update on the fragrance.

I'm not big on the peachy fragrance either. So far, Intense Rainbow, Nebel's Rainbow, and Gulf Stream have a peachy/fruity fragrance. I do like the classic plumeria fragrance, the spicy fragrance, and the coconut suntain oil fragrance. So far, my favorites for fragrance are Celadine, Singapore, Kauka Wilder, and Miami Rose/Key West Pink (both are the same). Some yellows are very nice. Negril is supposed to smell like cloves. I too have heard that India, Grove Farm, and Charlotte Ebert are great for fragrance.

I highly recommend Florida Colors for all of these cultivars because they have the best prices and because you can order them grafted, which will save you from having too root them. They have a web site that you can place an order at or you can call Carol and place an order by phone: http://www.floridacolors.com/ As a matter of fact, I just ordered a Negril, Lurline, Magnum Opus and some others from them. Magnum Opus is supposed to have a nice fragrance also.

Hetty is a reliable seller, and there are a few other reliable ones on eBay like ncasselberryfla, frangipaniheaven, and HawaiiSandy, but do be careful because there are a lot of unscrupulous ones out there too. Feedback often does not tell the whole story, and there is one seller named Sue70 who is selling cuttings infested with the borer beetle. You definitely take a risk when you order plumerias on eBay. The best way to check if a seller is reputable is ask other plumeria growers.

I'm not familiar with Lowes Mix, but it sounds fine. You could add both pumice and perlite or one or the other. You just want the water to drain well when you water and not keep the mix wet. The nice thing about pumice is that it doesn't gather at the top of the soil like Perlite does and stays mixed in better.

I forgot to mention to you to check out the PlantFiles for pictures of some of these: http://davesgarden.com/pf/b/Apocynaceae/Plumeria/none/cultivar

Here is the Florida Colors's Variety List: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/571517/

That's a very helpful list Clare. My Scott Pratt has very little fragrance, though (but it makes up for it with its fabulous blooms and great leaves!)
Sue70 is not in Hawaii but in the Florida Keys
Chantell, yes that's me LOL
Here is a picture of India - one of my favorites (and as Clare said, Florida Colors will not disappoint you if you order from them - that is where mine came from!)

I should also mention that Florida Colors have many varieties in stock that are NOT on their list - so if you're looking for something specific it's worth calling them. They are a two-man operation and they don't have much time for regular updates of their website.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Hetty, thanks for the correction. You are quite right, and I'll edit my post and fix the error.

That is good to know about Scott Pratt. FC has a new red called Malaysian Red, a 3" dark red with large inflos and a strong spicy fragrance, which sounds very tempting.

That's a lovely India, Hetty.

Yes, good point about Florida Colors's varieties. In fact, I think there are very few varieties that they don't have! LOL!

Wow!!! I'm in Plumeria Info heaven here!!! Can't believe these beauties have elluded me for all this time. Now if we could just leave old man winter behind...they're now calling for another one...OMG - what happened to the mild winter we WERE having. Grrrr! Clare and Hetty thank you both so much for the suggestions. THAT list Clare...will surely help me from emailing people to death re the scent! :)

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

LOL, Chantell! If you ever have a question about a scent of a flower, feel free to post it here at the Plumeria Forum because I'm sure either Hetty, Roger, Michael, Brad, Kukiat, me, or someone else here will know it personally or know of it. We're all obsessed! LOL! And with a little time and a few sniffs, you might become obsessed too! LOL!

Speaking of fragrance, I just bought Henrietta from Florida Colors which was named after our very own Hetty! Hetty, can you describe the fragrance of your flower?

I only 'met' Henrietta once, the day Luc named her for me, and gave me two grafted cuttings to take home. The inflo on one of them was taken by Hurricane Wilma and so - my recollection of the fragrance is not very clear anymore. I know it was 'nice' LOL.
I'm hoping to have blooms this summer.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Thanks, Hetty. When I ordered it, Carol said it was very sweet. I hope we both have blooms this summer on her. She is a lovely flower. What an honor!
