Any Water Gardening Nuts here???

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

LOL, I am getting back into growing Lotuses and was wondering if there was anybody who grows Lotuses?? I will get into growing waterlilies soon as I get my son's pond liners cleaned out...and redone..he is in the US Army so it fell on my shoulders to keep them alive..lol...
I will have over 10 kinds of Lotuses growing here...will post pics of my Lotuses tubs or ponds...

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

Anybody?? I know there has got to be some ponders out there...

McKinney, TX(Zone 7b)

I have 6 lotuses right now. Plus, I'm about to start seeds for some more. I'd love to see pics of yours.

I have been making very poor attemps at some type of water.... well, not a feature, or a pond, but something that will hold water and maybe grow a plant or two. I've always felt a little overwhelmed when looking in on the Water Gardens forum, but I notice a new thread about small water containers, so I'll check it out more when I get home (if I don't collapse w/exhaustion - rough month.)

I would dearly love to grow a lotus, just don't know what to do, what size container it would need, or where to get one. I bought a "Water Mosaic" plant last Aug, for a tub that I've been playing with. It grew quickly, and I loved it! But then some kind of stringy, sea-weedy looking algae took over, so I don't know how to get rid of that without killing the plant (if it's still alive) or other critters (I want to encourage dragonflies).

Silverfluter and her DH Tom have a pond, it's lovely. She'll probably stick her head in here soon, just depends on how busy they are right now.

Hi Moodene - I have a koi pond, and two lillies, but no lotus. I would also love to see your pix! jackie

McKinney, TX(Zone 7b)

Maggie, lotus can be grown in large tubs (like the whiskey barrels or the blue plastic ones at the dollar store or HD). They don't like square containers though. I didn't put them in my pond because my pond is on the small side & I didn't want them to take over.

Ya'll have to understand.....I **will*** have about 10 lotuses growing here soon as they get here...lol..I have my tubs all ready and 3 pond liners..
Maggie, There are mini lotuses and waterlilies that ya can grow in small containers on patio tables..lol..
String algae can be a problem..I just take eveything out of the ponds and clean it real good....and them darn little snails can be the pits...

I am getting Lotuses from this place called Texas Waterlilies..which is in Hockley, Texas...just outside fo Houston, Texas...and they also have waterlilies too..
Tell them that Nadine sent ya'll to his site...
here is the website.. www.texaswaterlilies.com

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I have three ponds, one with Koi and Shubunkin. None of the ponds are that large. I don't have Lotus, I don't remember why. I have a few water lily plants, pickerl, horsetail, lizard's tail and a few other small ones. Best of luck with your new Lotus.

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

Thanks, just got an e-mail from them and I can either go pick them up or have them mailed to me...can't wait...yahoo...

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Nadine, do you mean you can pick up from texaswaterlilies? Their site looks like it's strictly by mail. I actually drive very close to them whenever I am traveling for work, so I know where they are. I didn't see anything on the site to show me which specific plants they sell, pictures, prices... Guess I should e-mail them?

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

Everything is on the website..prices and pics..they have 30 ponds..
potted plants or bareroots...it comes up fine for me...the whole nine yards...

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Hmmm.... All I get is some text and a reeeaaaally long page of just the water-drop background. Nothing to click on, no pics. I tried refreshing but get the same thing. I typed in the link, still got the same thing.

I'll keep trying.

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

Here is part of the price list...
http://www.texaswaterlilies.com/index_files/Page543.htm

Maybe that will help...I hope to get them Sunday..

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Thanks Nadine. The page shows up for me with text written over other text, but I could at least get an idea of prices, which are really reasonable! I think I'll give them a call.

Nice pond Jackie.
Off topic, I see your name each time and it makes me remember a classmate of long ago in Atlanta TX. Just wanted you to know, I smile when I see your posts.

Hi Maggiemoo. I'm finally sticking my head in here. We have had string algae and somebody told Tom to use hydrogen peroxide. I did work, but it took quite a lot of it. For your little tub though it probably wouldn't take much. I would maybe start with half a cup and keep increasing it til the algae is gone. It doesn't bother the fish or birds at all.

We have some water plants that need dividing and I'm hoping that I can get rid of some divisions at the RU. We have some sweet flag and 2 others that I don't know the name of.

Sheila, I am eighty miles north of Ft Worth .....2 miles east of the new Winstar Casino.........we built up here on acerage 2 years ago after a lifetime in Irving. We had owned the land 20 years before moving here. No one has ever lived on these 30 acres before us, so it's pretty neet...............

Definately georgeous property!

Silverflutter,
I will be at the swap in College Station Apr 29. I traded a lot of my pond plants last year for other items. I have not got much coming up now, except water iris. I will have something to trade for water plants, but not sure what right now.

Moodene, I would love to see a pic of your tubers. I took the plunge and ordered some water lilies and lotuses from them. Their prices are phenomenal. Cant wait. Might have to dig another pond though. And you guys know how I love to take pictures. I am going to bore you silly with all the water lily and lotus pics.

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Hey, we won't be bored with pics! Snap away!

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

Sheila, is water iris the same as sweet flag or is it Lousiana iris? If it's La iris and different from mine, I would be interested in a trade.
