De-lurking in Texas

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Even though I’ve posted a few times, I’ve still been too shy to really say hi. I’m a relatively novice gardener from Austin, TX, where I garden by trial-and-error (lots of both). I’ve been gardening mostly in containers, but after our move mid-year, that will change. I’m a cook by day, and mucking around in the yard inspires me and helps me decompress after particularly frustrating days. This community seems both informative and friendly, and I’m excited to be here.

Welcome ampy! I'm NW of the San Antonio area. You'll just love having more room to garden! Welcome Loretta! Wish you were here! Warm, yes! But the drought is no fun! Just got a little rain, however, and loved it!

Thanks for all the welcomes and Loretta, welcome yourself! You're right, it's beautiful here right now...too beautiful, in fact. I fear for what the rest of the year will be like after this un-winter. While I'm not sure I'd trade situations, I'm a little bit jealous-I think I can count the number of times I've seen real snow on one hand.

Hi Linda, yay for more Texans. You're right, even though actually moving doesn't sound appealing at all, I'm keeping myself motivated with the thought of more room. I've been putting my veggies and some herbs in the ground, but I haven't been able to bring myself to landscape or put in raised beds, since I knew I'd be leaving it behind. Of course, now I have to face moving all those containers...

Herbie, I've got quite aa few friends in upstate NY, but I have to admit they're mostly too bitter about the weather to talk to me this time of year... I'll certainly stop by the recipies forum, thanks! I've gotten lazy myself about cooking at home, so maybe it'll jump-start me. ^_^

Ampy our weather in MI.is about the same as up state N.Y. nice and cold..Are your friends anywhere near Corfu N.Y.?I have friends that live up there too but never go up there in the winter..And here you are talking about planting and when I look outside all I have to look at is frozen ground and hope my plants survive the winter..Happy planting..!! :o))

I've never actually been to NY, myself! My friends are from Hudson Falls and Plattsburgh and such, but I think most of them are currently in and around the Albany area. I'm not sure where Corfu is.

I don't mean to rub it in. ^_^ My excuse is that I'm getting my kicks in mostly with the pansies and violas now, since by the time the rest of the country is doing their pansies, they're scorched out of the ground here. Hopefully I'll get a picture of my compulsively planted pansies sometime soon.

I'll be singing a different tune in midsummer though, when the temperature is over 100 and the flowers are bleached and the leaves are scorching...I'll be jealous of you then! ^_- Do you do any of those crazy MI winter sports like ice climbing?
