info on trimming cat's toenails please

over the years i always trimmed their toenails from little on and it was never an issue. Mr.TomBoyJones does take issue with it however! it gets harder and harder for me to do them. do i even need to? he has two wooden chairs that he shreds everyday (he is strictly indoor). i know if i didn't trim the dogs nails i would have problems but cats? you tell me. thanks, debi
