I would like to try growing a brug from seed

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Last year I bought a packet of Thompson&Morgan brugmansia seed at a nursery out of curiosity, to see if I could grow it for a large tub I have. I turned to this group for help. As it turned out, the seed was actually datura, and some people were rather cross with me for writing in this forum. I'm sorry about that.

I'd like to try again. After reading some of the posts here and seeing the gorgeous photographs, I'm willing to take up the challenge. My problem is finding good seed in Canada, or available to Canada, since I'm not sure about seeds and the border, customs, etc. Does anyone have any hints for me?

Since this will be a featured plant, I'm hoping for one that is spectacular and yet reliable to grow. Something we hope for in everything we do!

Any help will be appreciated. If I offend, just give me the boot again.

I don't know why there would be any problem sending seeds to and from Canada. Guess I will be hearing from Canadians real fast. LOL

I have sent and received seeds from the Netherlands, New Foundland, Germany and other places with no problems. I have marked on the outside of the packet that they are seeds.

Anyway, if nobody would answer your query, they surely will get stirred up about mine. LOL

I too have sent and received seeds from Canada and the Netherlands, to name a few places. Either I have had good luck with customs not paying attention or there is no problem.

From what I hear there is not problem with seeds only live plants, then you need papers from customs.

Oh Andy, I am glad you have come back. I am so sorry if we sounded rude to you before. I remember you had a gorgeous pot and had mixed your datura with a canna. I often do mixed pots myself. Did you take a picture when it bloomed? I bet it looked great. I love daturas, I just do not seem to have the room to grow them. When I grow them in pots, they do not do so great, I know I am doing something wrong with them. How did yours turn out??

Here's a picture of the datura when it bloomed, and yes, it was in a large pot with yellow cannas. The datura was a double, opening yellow/white and then turning buff. It was barely fragrant at night/early morning. Pretty disappointing, considering I thought I was growing brugmansia seed. It grew to about 4' and seemed to trive in the VERY crowded pot, as the cannas kept send up new shoots. I have about 30 canna rhizomes with growing tips for this spring. I'll be starting them and donating them to my local park 'friends' committee.

The pot and its space is such a great feature, I really wanted to have the brugmansia there, so maybe this year I'll have better luck. Some folks have been very kind helping me find seed. Thanks! Photos of REAL brugs to follow if I'm successful.

Andrew
