Whats on the spring 2006 list?

Louisville, KY

Well every year I have a list I start working on usually stock and such. The good list's are the ones that take years to finish. So it seems this year and the next few years are going to be ground breaking for some new tropicals. are their any that top the list? What do you think will be the best tropicals for this year? Truthfully I think the hardy tropicals have and probably will be the best sellers for sometime. They do well here. That is once they are willing to believe that they will survive here.

Personally I don't have much to want besides a few very rare philodendrons out of south america that I have already killed once. Besides that most of what I am all excited in is already growing in the greenhouses and are waiting to be tested for this season. So all in all I am content which maybe the first spring like this in over 12 years!

I will be very interested in getting more tropicals that are hardy to my zone 6A. It's the pits digging up all these nice plants and hoping that they will survive the winter, and praying that when you plant them in the spring they will come back.

Could either of you recommend some low growing mostly green tropical plants that I can use for the front of my house? Many of the ones I have seen in books are gorgeous but just get too big. Thanks!! Karen

I will have to leave this up to Brian. I like the big plants myself.

Well you have a whole lot of options. The real question is what do you want out of the plant and what look do you want. You could go with agave type plants their are a few with no thorns and are soft. To miniture bananas or cannas. Then their are a ton of other small tropical shrubs. Here is what you need to ask exactly how tall
Do you want flower if so what kind
then structure some plants are good fill in others are center pieces do you want them all the same or different forms? Bromeliads may look nice it can really be up to your preference.

If your looking for a shrub for landscape. A few years back I was at a place in miami they used jasmine for shrubs. It smelled amazing around that place just a thought.
