There's been a foul rumor (in my opinion since I hate winter) going around in my little town today that it's going to get cold again on the first weekend of Feb, but I can't find anything anywhere to support this. I don't even know of any forecasts that go past seven days, and even they are very iffy toward the end of that seven days lol.
Anyone hear about this besides people in my immediate area? Crossing my fingers for small town gossip gone bad hehe...
Cold coming?
I don't know what part of Texas you are in but someone at work a week ago told me we were supposed to get a "siberian express" (exact quote) around the beginning of Feb. I asked them where they heard such a long range forecast and they just looked at me like I was mental. I figure if gardeners and other outdoor enthusiasts can't get accurate long range predictions--where does the general population get them?
I'm as baffled as you indigo where they are coming up with this info.
Deb
It's supposed to be in the 70s up here this weekend & in the 60s next week. The NOAA forecast is up to Thursday of next week.
I'm around 30 miles south of San Antonio dmj. Maybe the rumor worked it's way over from your area lol.
All the forecasts I've found show no cold (more that it's already been anyway) as far as they go, so I guess time will tell... I'm hoping not because I will have to go and buy more plastic paint tarps and bargain bin mismatched bedsheets than I ever have at walmart to cover all the stuff that's already sprouted:-(
I thought it was me that should be looking at them like they were mental......obviously they haven't been aware of the winter thus far! lol
I think weather.com gives a 15 day forecast, but they aren't very accurate. We're supposed to be cool this weekend, but not cold according to the local weatherman. (of course "cold" for us is anything under 60*F)
I am expecting severely cold weather, but of course I can't predict when. With our luck, it will be in March or April with the weird weather we have had lately. Here is a link to a site that gives a long range forecast for cities in Texas. Knowing that the weather people have a difficult time predicting the weather just day to day, the accuracy is doubtful. It predicts no severely cold weather the first part of February. Select your city from the pull down menu. Click on "Go". Then, click on "15-Day Forecast" which is to the right of where is says "AccuWeather Quick Look™" near the top of the page. Then, to the right of "Forecasts", click on "All 15 Days".

Well I checked out the link htop put in her post. If that is true, none of you have anything to worry about in the next couple of weeks. It won't get lower than the 50's during the day up here. It gets down to the high 30's at night, but it shouldn't be a problem. "IF" there prediction is true. But the Stock Show is going on in Fort Worth and it is usually our worse winter weather time. But then we are in a strange year weather wise.
I dunno, Sheila - 2nd week of February looks like lows consistently in the 20's for us in FTW. I have several things with bloomstalks up already.....
htop-
Thanks for the great link!

Well I bet neither of us will have anything come the second week in Feb!
Hey are you going to the round up in April? I plan to, and I have another DGer that is riding down with me; hope to meet you there.
I'm hoping that it's too far in advance to be accurate... fingers are crossed for all of us lol.
pretty warm down here...highs supposedly in the 70's all week.
I have Iris blooming... and yarrow.. I really hope every doew not get bit back tooooo bad!
It was 87 here today, but this evening the temps started falling. It's 68-70 right now.
What I recall is that we always have a "final" cold spell sometime in February. One February (many years ago and don't ask how many), I recall a blizzard on February 27th.
Posie--it usually ALWAYS comes as soon as you break down and put out those tomato and pepper seedlings! lol
it always comes when you decide to wear a short sleeve shirt & no jacket to the Houston Rodeo.
Quick! Someone put out some sacrificial tomato and pepper seedlings, lol!!
Sure do enjoy the pics of tulips and corocuses (crocusi?) Keep 'em coming! Steve, are you going to be at the RU in College Station April 29th?
Quick! Someone decide to wear a short sleeve shirt & no jacket to the Houston Rodeo, lol!!
:-)
Ok I am going to have sacrifice something because I do not want any cold weather- a few mos. ago it would have been ok, but I am in the spring planting mode now.
I have seedlings growing out my ears waiting for the weather to be good to set them out... it is soooo tempting but with so many hard to find seeds ready to go out I cannot risk any of them being the sacrifice (I did notice that I have some extra flowers up would planting them out there for the winds to beat up work?)
LOL, Mitch!
I'm going to put some cedar fence boards that I've fashioned with a point at the bottom all around my large front bed today just incase so I can put a big plastic drop cloth over everything. As for my other beds, old sheets and the plastic I bought in november will have to do. I agree completely with what aprilwillis said lol.
One of the San Antonio weather guys (chan. 12, for anyone interested) claims that the signs are that the "Polar vortex" (whatever that is) looks to be moving down over the great lakes region next week and that will lower temps to a more typical level. The accuweather link with the 15 day forecast seems to agree so far sadly, with temps by next Thursday at 59 for a high here:-(
Indigoez, I saw theweather forecast on WOAI that said that the jet stream will be dropping south around Thursday or Friday of next week allowing much colder weather to head our way. What a beautiful day we had today.
71 here today!
We broke records today, official high of 94*F. It's supposed to cool down starting tomorrow afternoon, will be in the upper 60's by Wednesday or Thursday.
The 15 day forcast has pushed those nasty 50's back another week to the 18th instead of the 9th... I truly believe that they have no idea beyond the next few days lol.
The temps have fallen 30* in the last 4 hours here. It was 93, now it's 63 with terrible winds(50-60 mph gusts).
I think we can about hang up brutally cold weather down here in Houston now--I would bet my next paycheck we are not going to see a freeze this winter. I think I will put out a few tomato seedlings later for grins and chuckles--I got plenty of backups!
Well hold on to your tomatoes. My thermometer says 38 and it isn't quite 8 yet? Wonder if it went down a little lower than that?
I live in Mont Belvieu a good 45 minutes + from Houston. We don't usually get as cold here because we are closer to the water.
Might have to light fireplace. I refuse to turn on the heat except to take chill off the house to shower, then it goes back off. I refuse to give all my money to the electric company. That is unless DGDs are here.
Is this sticking around? I will go out later and check plants. Did not know it was going to get cold.
Light freeze (32) on the Red this am.
did not freeze here....tomatoes can take 38 as long as the wind ain't whipping them to death--I have plenty of back ups.
It was 34 last night here. The weather forecast predicted 39. It is usually 2 to 3 degrees colder where I live than is forecast for San Antonio.
We were 48 this morning! It warmed up fast though and turned out to be a super nice day.
Well it finally got here. How many others did as I did today ... covered as many plants
with sheets and moved others into the garage or safe harbor? I just read we are
suppose to have 10 hours of freeze tonight and in the early morning. My heart sank
when I read that. Oh well we will see what survives and what gets bit back. :(
It is here now too... Yikes 34 and it is only 9:30! All my DLs were up ... the lady next to me had a rose blooming this morning - it is not going to be blooming after this little cold spell! Glad I brought all my Iris in the house - so many blooms I could not afford to loose! (funny what I can and can lose... )
Mitch
Oops, not enough sheets, blankets and such to cover the whole dang yard. Prioritize, I guess. Well, just hope to leave the pipes in good shape! Temp out there already under 28.
