This is the first time for this hoya to bloom for me. I love the flowers and it also has a nice fragrance.

I was so bummed last Spring when it blasted it's buds. It is definitely a keeper for me.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Patricia....how do the leaves look? I stopped growing this cross because the leaves always looked yellowish and 'sick'...maybe it gets too much light here. Are yours all green?

Sandy...how are your leaves?

I've had a cutting for more than a year now, but it doesn't grow... Anyone else find this is a slow grower?

Nice flowers!

So, what IS this plant? Is it a cross between australis & BSI-1 (subclava)? 'Who crossed them? Someone should give it is's own name...it is such a pretty flower!!
Marcy

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

It is a cross. The one I have was crossed by Ed Gilding. David Liddle, as mentioned in Mark's piece about H. australis, thinks that H. naumanii may be a wild cross of these two plants.

Very pretty Patricia!!

My plant is starting to make new growth now. It had produced two leaves since it was rooted, both dark green and normal looking. Now it has started a new stem, and the new leaves are light green, pink, and yellow with have the same mottled chlorosis that my BSI-1 always gets, and that I think naumanii is prone to. I had hoped that this hybrid would not have that sensitivity. Oh well. It has been suggested that this is due to micro-nutrient over-load or metal poisoning. My BSI-1 has been top-dressed with Green Restore, a granular corrective for chlorosis that has calcium, sulphur, iron, manganese, and zinc in chelated forms. It also gets a dilute formula of fertilizer with higher nitrogen and lower concentrations of everything else. It is slowly improving, but is not exactly the picture of health.

Did you know that the D word is not allowed on DG? I had it in the above post and it was removed by management!

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

OH, DARN!

Los Angeles, CA(Zone 9a)

Markroy, I have that exact same thing happening on my naumii. Looks like I will need to get some of that Green Restore. I just can't seem to keep that plant happy. Do you know what causes the chlorisis? I haven't been giving them any fertililzer nor is there any metal. Weird!
Heather

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

My BSI-1X gets half dark green half light green leaves...when grown in a lot of light....in low light they stay pretty much dark. I think, personally, that it is some inherent in the BSI-1 which also gets funky looking leaves from time to time...discolored, twisted...and then it is OK. No virus, no fungus...just funky. I have never had a problem on H. naumanii...she grows outside in the filtered shade with tons of water....maybe the water flushes out most of whatever she doesn't like?

Carol

David Liddle suggested that the problem may be metal poisoning- I looked it up on the web and it is VERY confusing, involving buildup of obscure elements which may be caused by fertilization. This is apparently a bigger problem in Australia than for us. I was wondering if it may be the result of a ph problem. I know that at various ph levels certain elements become unavailable for uptake to the plant, regardless of their concentration in the soil. I've seen it recommended for several Australian species (calycina, magnifica) to have lime added to the soil, which would result in a "sweet" higher ph soil. Maybe the BSI-1 family would prefer a higher ph, like an eriostemma?

Los Angeles, CA(Zone 9a)

Hmmmm.....this all sounds very confusing, I think I will just have to try some of that Green Restore. I have some ph tester for water around here. Would I have to get something different to test the soil?
Heather

San Francisco, CA

Yeah, theres's a different kind of tester for soil, pretty simple and cheap at most nurseries. Unless your soil is something funky, it's probably nuetral or slightly acid. Adding lime of some sort, oyster shells or whatnot, would increase the ph slightly. There was a thread recently about suitable additives, does anyone remember it?

League City, TX(Zone 9a)

If you have a feed store nearby....go in and ask for the crushed oyster shell. Usually it's in a bin with a scoop and you just buy however much you want. They feed it to chickens.

Los Angeles, CA(Zone 9a)

How much would I add to say a 4" pot? I noticed the same thing happening to one of my imperalis. That may be for different reasons, cold draft. But the naumii is constantly doing this with the leaves. Thanks for the tips!
Heather

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

I put a pinch in the pot...a pinch with all 4 fingers in a 4" pot. I use it sparingly and only on Eriostemmas. In my pile of potting mix....I put in a couple of those pinches...just to sweeten the soil a bit. I sprinkled about a Tablespoon on the pots of Eriostemmas outside and they love it!

Thank you, just checked in again today. Looks like I'll be stopping by a feed store today!
