Any georgia members out there? I am new to the discussion list and looking forward to the many great ideas and help from the group. I have a question hope you can help - my husband and I just had a landscape designer create a plan for our new home. We will only be able to do one section at a time and wonder if anyone has had good results with buying shrubs online. The designer recommends 3-gallon size plants but I have noticed that most sites offer very small plants/shrubs - usually 1 gallon size. Maybe I should try to find a wholesale nursery that allows public access. Thanks.

Hello and welcome gliz!
Many people from Georgia out there... but I'm not one of them ;)
I personally try to plant the one gallon or smaller if available as opposed to the three or five gallon sized plants. Main reason being that I find smaller plants tend to have a considerably higher survival rate than those that are larger. Same deal holds true for tree saplings in my opinion. So much so that people who have side by side plantings often notice that the 1 gallons tend to catch up and often times over take their carbon copy in the larger pot within a few years. I used to purchase the largest pots I could afford to buy believing that bigger is better. Not necessarily so when it comes to reducing transplant shock.
The cost savings of purchasing smaller plants that are more likely to survive is definitely a consideration too. It sure does help and that means I can buy more plants!
Here's hoping to see you over in the trees and shrubs site.

Thanks Elaine, Michael, Lauri, Herbie43, Hope43, and Equilibrium for the very warm welcome. I have been a subscriber for less than a week but already have enjoyed many of the forums and the live chat. The energy and enthusiasm of the membership is contagious and I know that I will be learning so much from everyone. (and having fun doing it!)
Greetings Elaine ~ from your neighbor in PTC, GA. I just opened up a membership this morning. I stumbled across Daves Garden while googling for some tomato growing information. I planted my first tomato crop last spring and spent the summer eating the best tomatoes of my life.
I have not purchased shrubs on line, but did want to say hey!

Hello from North Georgia!
hi i am kelly and new also and also from ga. welcome!
Hello roseone33 and Kelly - thanks for the welcome.
Kelly, what are your favorite daylillies? I am in zone 7b also and have to plant deer resistant plants but love day lillies. Do you know of varieties that are less tasty to deer than others. I have some stella d'oro in the front of my home that were left untouched last year but would love to plant more varieties around the sides and back of my home this spring. thanks, Liz
well liz i must say i am not sure about the deer. at my home i haven't seen any deer i am sure they are here but i don't have any problems. my father is a landscaper and he planted some pansies in a new subdivison last year the deer ate them so, he replaced them and they just made a feast on them again! they even chomped on some of the home owners shrubs. i think if the deer are hungry enough they must like most things. i must say i am partial to the pink and purple varieties of daylilies. i love all the candies like strawberry candy etc. i must say my favorite is janice brown and daring deception. i have had alot of luck with big frans hals and pandoras box also. and i do love stella d'oro as do you. the yellow is so cheerful!
