Welcome to DG from another Cedar Rapids gardener! Plan to attend the Iowa round-up in May. Hope to get to know you.
Welcome Moonlight1
welcome.. glad to have iowans...
Hi, Linda!
I'm from Davenport, and just joined today, January 28, 06.
What are you refering to, when you mentioned the Iowa Round-Up in May? Please reply, if you would. Thanks! DeannaV
You guys need to get Jamlover from a different site over here.
Welcome Deanna! There is a DG Iowa Roundup each May in Des Moines. Basically a bunch of us get together for a HUGE potluck, getting to know each other, and a big plant swap. Bring extras of what you have and take home some new plants. Don't have extras..............not to worry. Bringing plants is not required. Some people who don't have extras to swap bring a tray of annuals or nothing at all. Go over to the roundup forum, scroll down to the Iowa Roundup thread and check it out. There's a separate thread for Iowa Roundup door prizes................oh yeah, there's door prizes too. It's a lot of fun. This year, it is May 7. I'm not too computer swift, or I'd put a link here to it, but I don't know how to! Sorry. But welcome to DG. What are your interests? I have perennial gardens, and my favorites are iris and daylily, but I have a pretty wide variety of others too. Linda
Linda,
I apologize for not replying sooner. I'm trying to find my "sea Legs" around this site! I'm afraid I have no idea where the roundup forum is, or how to get there, yet.
I'm big on perennials, both tender and semi-hardy as well as lots of hardy to our area. I also love to use annuals for constant color, and summer bulbs are a must-I have a 20 ft border of King Humbert Cannas and a 25 ft bed of monster Elephant Ears that I dig and re-plant every year. Every spring and every fall, I swear I'm not going to do THAT again....but, I always do! HA! Just can't help myself. I have roses, but they are my least favorite of all my shrubs and flowers. I love playing with variety, and most years have 50-75 varieties-including annuals, bulbs, perennials, shrubs and grasses. We have a pretty large corner lot, so it's feasible- and I'd have to classify my "style" as formal to semi-formal. I stay away from the "wild " look. I also love vines- have virginia creeper covering 40 feet of the tall wooden plank fence on north side of our property. Had yellow trumpet vine covering the arbor my husband made me 10 years ago, but we took that out this last year. I llove my hibiscus, hydrangeas(nikko blue and annabelle) my myriads of asiatic lilies, iris, coneflowers, black-eyed susans, holly, smoke bushes, sedums, hollyhocks,etc.etc.etc. Reds, yellows, hot pinks, purples and whites are my theme colors. I also love to interspace hardscape, to bring it all together.Hope this explains my interests a little. Ha!
Welcome from North Florida, --Michael;
Deanna: Wow, your yard sounds beautiful. You mention iris - my friend, Wandasflowers on DG, has something like 250 varieties that she SHARES if you are ever looking for something different. She likes to trade. She lives here in CR pretty close to me and our daughters grew up together. We often do road trips so maybe sometime this summer we could visit your garden or you could visit ours, although hers is something to behold - mine is "average."
I swear I need to learn how to do hyperlinks, but I'm techno-challenged. To find the forums, from the Home page, select My Info, then Forums, then scroll down to Dave's Garden Community. There you will see the Round-Up forum. Once that's selected, there are two for the Iowa Round Up - one for the general round-up info and one for door prizes. As it gets closer, there will probably be others where people will post what plants they might be bringing for the plant swap and others work out individual trades - I'll bring you this named daylily for your named iris, etc. TRY TO ATTEND. It's a good time, and you can't believe the friends you can make and the FREE plants you can take home. Oh, and when you are on the forums page, you can check the ones you are most interested in and after that, they will pop up on your home page when you log on.
Have a great day. Linda
Linda,
A hyperlink is just creating a shortcut. You go to that page, right click copy and then go to where you want to put it, and right click paste. So easy I can do it.

Al, not in Iowa
Hi, Michael.
thanks for the Welcome! What I wouldn't give to be in Florida for the next couple weeks! Just heard the extended weather- sounds like we've got a "Polar Express" headed our way!
Note to Al:
Boy, that's great news about inserting hyper-links! It was going to be one of my next (probably one of MANY!) questions! :o)
Well ,come visit it is nice this time of year, --but I often wish I was farther north in July and August, ---
hello from upstate new york.
Hi bigcityal,
Thanks for your help with the hyperlink. You are certainly most welcome to come on down from Wisconsin to join us at the Iowa Roundup on May 5 & 6. We have good folks from all the neighboring states coming and Wisconsinites are sure welcome!
Also Welcome to the Garden DeannaV. You have come to the right place to find friendly, knowledgable and helpful gardening advice. Pull up a chair and join in the many good conversations that are going on here in the "garden". Hope to meet you at the Iowa Roundup also. It really is a wonderful day, well spent with great friends. Some you have yet to meet.
Iowaron
Thanks Ron,
I probably will make it to Iowa this year, but when, where and why have not been decided - I will keep it in mind. Mornin'Gayle is dying to see me(my side of the story). I also have a Midwest Roundup in southern Wisconsin to decide about also. Glad to see a growing IA community here.
I converse with a dahlia grower in Cedar Rapids not on this forum that you need to get in here also.
Al
Hey Al,
Go ahead and invite your friend the dahlia grower and Jamlover to look us over. The more the merrier we always say.
Hope your plans will include our Roundup in addition to the Midwest Roundup They will both be woderful memory makers.
Ron
