White Fly

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

Any suggestions for getting rid of white fly - I've been using neem oil spray -- but the little buggers are still around! I've thought about ordering the Yellow sticky tapes...

I've had them on my other plants and have been fighting to get rid of them. I have lantana and mandevilla downstairs that I am over wintering. They haven't been bothering my african violets - actually, I am guessing they are white fly - they are acting like aphids, but I see flying [fly-like] adults. I thought you all might have suggestions based upon experience. I am spraying with neem oil and I just bought seabright strips. Should suffice for now?

You could try orange oil- somebody makes an agricultral type orange oil, you mix w/ water. I sprayed outdoors on my aphids last season, it has to be applied a few times, I guess for egg/larvae. It seems to work and they say it has a "fertilizer" action when sprayed. I am not totally convinced but bugs in general seem to dislike it and hey, it smells good too.

I'll look into that too - thanks april

see if you can find ultra fine oil in your stores...that is pretty good...as in some malathion with soap...if they are on the underside of the leaves...they will look white...and fly whne you move them...don't wish these on anyone....you might try some of those sticky fly traps they have for sale in stores...you know the kind that sort of hang down and unravel as they go

I've got white fly on a couple of my scented geraniums this winter -- never had a problem with it before. I knocked them back pretty well with a spray of water with a squirt of dish soap, but there are still a few around, so I'm happy to see the suggestions here! (Yes, they are staying away from my AV's.)

I found what seemed to be an overnight invasion of whitefly on my Brugmansia in my ghse. A bit of Bayers did the trick in about one week.
the other night when we had a big yella' moon, I went into my greenhouse to put the heater on and the smell almost knocked me back out of the door. Dr. Seuss is blooming it's head off and the incredible fragrance was, well... incredible! (oops getting o/t)

ed. to say. not recommending Bayers for AV, just wanted to share what I used on my ghse.

Ok Bluebird has something called safe soap that says it works on white flies.
Also...Murphy's oil soap should help this problem since they are soft bodied insects.

You are welcome Anita.
Allison told me to use one capful of murphy's per gallon every time I water.
It seems to be keeping me wel away from the bugs *so far*
I also use neem oil on the foliage once a month or so.
Every now and again I still get fungus knats though

I'm going to try and get a picture of those little buggers...I seem to find them mostly on the Lantana
