April Secret Easter Bunny Trade: Leaves, Ears, & Plantlets!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

This is a continuation of the original thread for our Spring Secret Easter Bunny Trade in April, http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/555678/. Sign up for the trade is now closed, but I figured we'd enjoy posting updates and chatting about our propagation efforts. I'm so excited about my plans for my Easter Buddy's box!

Let's see some fun photos! Leaves, Ears, and Plantlets -- oh, my!

I've got at least ears now in most of my November leaf pots... Here's a shot of a leaf from 'Apache Victory' with several plantlets coming along! You know I'll have to put one of those in my Buddy's box!

This pair of plantlets has their first blooms this week! They're from from suckers from a plant MsC sent me last year... we think one of her 'Robs' Humpty Doo' chimeras reverted, so I'm calling this one "Humpty Who?" It looks like they will be trailers, and the blooms are a very pretty blue-violet, but they don't have the white pinwheel markings of Humpty Doo. I love them all the same, and I'm hoping the much larger momma plant will bloom soon too!

Do you suppose my Secret Buddy would like one? ;-)

Oh WOWOWOW critter..LOL
I hope I am on your gift giving list this yr! They are doing SO WELL!
My plantlets are still tiny lil things!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Well, I have to confess that most of my plantlets are also still tiny little things, LOL!

Not to worry, Lorry... my Secret Easter buddy may get first dibs on a bunch of them, but I'm keeping an eye on your wish list as I go along too! I think one of the coolest things about the Secret Easter Bunny Trade is that it seemed to get the ball rolling on lots of spring trading & propagating!

Because I just can't post without a picture, LOL, here's a plantlet of 'Yesterday's Valentine' that's coming along pretty well... it's the largest one so far in 3 pots with "ears," so perhaps it will go in my Bunny Box also...

You may remember that those leaves are ones I snitched before sending MsC her new plant from VG. Here's 'Yesterday's Valentine' in all its glory before I pakced it up! I just love the foliage on this trailer.

I am just teasing you critter :) I am sure whatever you send me will be FABULOUS!
Oh wow...yesterdays valentine is lovely! Whoever snickered should hang their head in shame :)
Without looking at the list..I believe you are one that asked me for Rob varieties. I have some great little suckers growing like mad! and starting to see ears on some of the leaves up! So if all goes well, you should have a HUGE box of goodies!
and spring cannot come soon enough! LOL..my plantstand is over run with babies!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Oh, I love Rob's minis! I've got a bunch of new plantlets & suckers in 1 inch pots that aren't doing much yet, but most of them are at least still green -- or green & white & pink in the case of these little 'Pink Dove' suckers in the center row!

oh, and I did get that you were teasing, Lorry.... gosh, maybe my response above sounded defensive? I guess I'd better start putting more smilies in my responses! :-) :-) :-)

I'll try to hold back on pruning the month before the Secret EB Trade, so hopefully I'll have at least 5 varieties of leaves for my box. I'm pretty sure I'll have more than 2 or even 7 varieties in plantlets, LOL, and I'm crossing my fingers that a couple of plants will be budding/blooming by then.

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

LOL..you could not sound defensive if you tried lady :)
The plantlets look great!
It took my suckers forever to do anything but once they did..look out! :)
I am sure they will do wonderfully!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Oh yes I could too sound defensive!!!

ROTFL!

Yes, I think it takes suckers a while to get nice roots, and then -- stand back!

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Yup..this is my experience...My Rob varieties sucker like CRAZY. I almost gave up on them doing anything and then BAM now the plantlets are growing like wildfire.

Don't worry there is still over two months of growing until the first swap and three months of growing till the second swap ! We have plenty of time !

How long before you see something encouraging after you put leaves down? I'm already staring at the ones I put down on the 13th! LOL I know it's waaaay too soon, but I still have to look! :o)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

With my new setup, I've seen ears in as little as 4 weeks, but it's usually closer to 6 or 8 weeks... and sometimes it can take much longer. As long as the leaf isn't wilting & drying up, I'm encouraged, LOL, and I'm even more encouraged once the leaf roots (a gentle tug will tell you this -- if it resists, it's rooted). There are lots of factors involved even once you find your favorite method of putting down leaves... I think the age & condition of the leaf has a lot to do with it. But even leaves that take forever to show anything will end up producing fine plantlets, so sometimes it's just a matter of waiting. (I stare at my leaf pots a lot, too!)
