How to propagate spider plant?

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

I have a few new babies on this right now. I tried once before- I just cut them off and stuck them in soil. They turned brown and died.

Can someone tell me how to propagate this? Thanks!

Stick them in a bowl of water and away they will grow! This is probably the EASIEST plant to root.

Kay,
Even I can do water- thanks!!

Do I cut off the entire long stalk w/the baby on the end or just the new baby and leave the bare stalk on the plant?

The way I did it was I put a small pot right next to the mamma plant, and used a bobby pin to pin it down into the soil. After a few weeks (at least 3), they resisted a little tug, so I cut the stem off, and it was fine. I waited until the babies had already started putting out little root buds of their own, first, though, before I potted them up.

I've also cut it with about one foot of the stalk or more, and just potted it up. Those were ok, too. The baby gets its food from the stalk until it puts out roots, if I remember correctly, so you don't want to cut the stem off too close to the baby, especially if it doesn't already have root buds.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

Thanks kelly! I am going to try both ways- in water and pinning them down.

No, cut the pup off right up next to its little body! You don't need the connector stem - HOWEVER, if you leave it attached to the mother plant, it will send out some more babies from that stem.

I've even dropped the baby into soil - as long as there are sufficient roots. If not - then I put them in water.

Thanks everyone!
I'll keep you posted on my babies' progress.
