Brent & Becky's is Online ! ! !

Denver, CO

My head about exploded; I will ne'er sleep tonight. Go here, ladies and gents:

The 2006 B&B Catalogue.
http://brentandbeckysbulbs.com/summer/?PHPSESSID=49f0159492a79ae112813a5e2e53d057

What will You order?
I know that I am about to become very near broke.
I'd just like to hear about those dreams swirling in your heads at night.
K. James

Denver, CO

Well, that's it. Very near broke if not so presently.

Horticulturalist's Warning: Late night PlantFiles searches should not be combined with new bulb catalogues. -A bit like wine and heavy machinery. I read the whole spiffing thing.

But it's all worth it for bananas, orchids, gingers, and assorted "lily" genera in next year's garden.... And they offer 10% off if you order early.

Please pray for my self-control, it has driven over a cliff.
K. James

Anyone else want to join "Bulbaholics Anonymous?" How about you, Voss?

I'll join. I noticed B&B's spring 2006 catalog last night and I think I'm going to easily end up spending a few hundred dollars. Bananas, Alocasia, Colocasias, Lachenalias, ginger of all sorts, plus more made my list.

Self-control? ha...I think that got tired of constantly be tested and left. Spring bulb catalogs are just so tempting.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

you guys are too cute, lol. And sure I will join BA!!!!!!

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I was looking at this plant. If you look in the info section it says hardy to z8. If you look at the graphic, it includes z9. Now I have to wait til tomorrow to get clarification.

https://store.brentandbeckysbulbs.com/summer/productview/index.php?sku=84-31

I am thinking about getting astilboides tabularis. I bought 2 from Digging Dog Nursery in CA and they died a miserable death last summer. Plants themselves were reasonable but shipping was very high. Price and shipping at B&B much more reasonable. I think I will try it again.

calla lilies selection is wonderful. Their price for Picasso is reasonable. I bought 3 in Dec 2005 (for more money). They started shooting leaves like crazy but some have rotted. I felt the tuber and it is solid but I am a little nervous that these calla won't make it. Any comments?

when is the first BA meeting??????

I was just over at bloomingbulb.com and they have their sping sale going. Not a big selection and the minimum purchase is 5 bulbs per variety, but they do have some lovely LAs and at 1.83 with free shipping, I think it's a pretty good deal. I ordered bulbs from them last year and, while not the biggest, they all looked good. These are the guys when I notified them that one of the amaryllis I ordered was severely stunted and, when bloomed, was not the bulb I ordered, refunded me the entire amount for my total order which was more than just that bulb.

Denver, CO

Welcome to the first official Bulbaholics Anonymous. It has been unofficially running under the title "Dave's Garden Bulb forum" for years.

I hope you find what you seek, Beaker.

Voss, your link took me to Lilium 'Muscadet.' Surely you don't mean that one? I did not buy 'Picasso,' from B&B; I just hope that mine from last year will bloom. Did your leaves turn yellow or just plain turn to mush? In any case, please go treat them with some sulfur. Good luck on the astilboides. I have read that they need both humidity and moisture, which is impossible here.

B&B certainly has the best varieties of Zantedeschia.

Here's to next summer's bulbs,
Kenton

OHHH! The Astilboides tabularis does look interesting. I bet those would roast this summer though. One of the downsides of living in the desert.

Now I'm caught up looking at bloomingbulb.com. Free shipping is making it very tempting.

Arlington, TX

I planted the last, final bulb yesterday. It's kinda sad, so I'm now entraced with the Summer cat!

I'm thinking about the pink crinum and some crocosmia. The big one, lucifer has come back nicely for me for several years, surely there's room for some other types....somewhere.

if y'all want true temptation, check out the site for crinums I posted on a crinum thread. Caution, may lead to unplanned expenditures.

cynthia

Hopefully I'm imune to the power of crinums this year. Last year I got a few different varieties, so I should be covered, right?

Corte Madera, CA

woo-hoo! kenton, thanks!

CONTROL IS AN ILLUSION!

=))))

Southeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Oh, no! I'm not joining this BA group. They might require bulb abstinence! Brent & Becky's online....I won't be sleeping. Already peeked in at the Alstroemeria Sweet Laura.

Brisbane, Australia(Zone 10a)

Thanks for the link to a great "garden porn" site JamesCO!

Denver, CO

Jess, ownership is not an immunity. On the contrary, it is a powerful susceptibility!

And Control is no illusion when it is red ink. I am done as far as orders go this year, and more than satisfied. One needs be happy with what one has for a while, eh? I can thank such great friends at DG for offering plants in trades and sating many potentially expensive desires. These are all organized just as school starts up again and eats my life.

Bulbaholics say:

Kenton

...highest quality compost-filth on the net...

Powerful, indeed. I already have crocosmias, but I crave more. Maybe I should just stop looking at all the catalogs, lol.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

Howdy fellow bulbaholics! JamesCo, I meant to link to Muscadet. I'm trying to figure out if is is hardy to z8 or z9.

I did not mean to link to Picasso. what is the sulphur for? leaves are mush but I did notice a couple of new ones coming back.

beaker, I found B&B and Bloomingbulb to be close enough on pricing. Luckily, both carry enough different inventory that I can buy from both as they are both good sources.

Denver, CO

I am sure that L. 'Muscadet' is hardy to at least 6, in my semieducated guess.
The sulfur is a fungicide, a good regular precaution. If a leaf turns to mush while they are still green, they have a nasty Erwinia rot that needs to be treated with it.
Cheers all, Kenton

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

hmmm. i'll go looking for it. I have had troubles in that spot as it is the lowest/wettest point in my garden. full sun but a pain, sometimes.

thanks

I just called B&B and they told me that L Muscadet won't do well in places with humid weather and warm nights, like Houston, TX area. they need cool. boo hoo.

Corte Madera, CA

oh, that's too bad, nery.

i found my "muscadet & crystal star" bag at costco for $8.99 (15 ct/bag). i'd love to order some online, to compare the size for the price, but just not in the budget this year.

here's the $0.60 costco lilies. is it a fair price? some come bigger, but on average, they look like this. what do you think?

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

My name is Kylee and I am a bulbaholic. LOL.

I don't have to go looking for bulbs and plants and flowers. They just find me. Like cats. (And no, we do NOT want any more of those.) I was window shopping last night and went all through B & B's. I thought they had their 2006 catalog online before this, but maybe not.

Here's my mantra: "I'll just get the ones I want right now and then I'll be happy."

(Sue) South Central, IA(Zone 5a)

from my viewpoint those look like really great bulbs and you can see why it becomes hard for small businesses to compete with the quality and the price if they all look like that.

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

This might seem like a dumb question, but can you plant all lily bulbs in the spring?

Denver, CO

Yes'm.

Just right, Annapet.

"My name is Kenton and I am not going to buy any lilies from 'The Lily Garden' this spring. "

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

annapet, those look pretty good to me, too.

they are twice the size of some I got at walmart last year, 10 for $5-6. Those BTW grew well, L. Centerfold. but it remains to be seen if they will come back. I will really be happy to report if/when they do.

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

Quoting:
"My name is Kenton and I am not going to buy any lilies from 'The Lily Garden' this spring. "

Oh, and that cuts severely into the number of places where you can buy lilies, doesn't it? ;-)

Denver, CO

Ah, loopholes! There is always the Lily Nook and The Lily Crate, eh?

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

and................and..............and..................LOL

Corte Madera, CA

GONE, GONE, GONE!

LOL

I CAN'T believe you all are making up more Bulb Shopping Lists!

You guys are really enthusiastic addicts! The Betty Ford will have to start a new and exclusive Program just for you! A highly intensive one, too. And they will have to tear out all of their lilies and tulips (at least while you're there).

And here I've been over at the 'Annuals' forum quietly making out measley seed lists and you've been over here buying more big fat lily bulbs! LOL

Kind of like drinking kool-aid while everyone else is enjoying Absolut! ;-)

But I'm on budget, at least! How dull! t.

Columbia Heights, MN(Zone 4a)

vossner - the normal growing zones for orientals are zones 5 through 9. They can be grown in zones 3 and 4 if planted deeper and mulched well. I don't know about above 9, but I would guess really warm areas need to provide some afternoon shade.

Denver, CO

We are all beyond any help here...

Denver, CO

Oh! I can't stand it! Annapet, what do you want for an 'Altari,' 'Visaversa' and a 'Donou?'

I'll have to look and see what I have nowadays to trade. I might have allocated everything! Ha!
Kenton

Corte Madera, CA

lol.

Denver, CO

I'll mail you of I scrape up anything. Or just plain rediscover something I have!...

Corte Madera, CA

i'll send them out today.

Corte Madera, CA

neal mentioned on the other thread that "ordering is gaining momentum" - - - gee, now what do i call my summer bulb frenzy the last two weeks?

WARM-UP!

t, glad you returned to check on us. hee-hee. aren't we a fun bunch =).

waiting everyday for the first narc to bloom. it's going to happen soon. btw. it's 6PM and 57F.

Denver, CO

Aha! I nearly stepped on the first crocus today. What a wierdo, there is hardly sign of other crocus' leaves, let alone flowers:

Does anyone recognize the cultivar? I planted both C. chrysanthus 'Goldilocks' and C. c. 'Dorothy,' but I don't recall either one having petal prints like this one.

oh, a little beauty came out already!
