grapevine advice needed

Can I make springy corkscrews out of grapvines? I'm thinking about wrapping grapevines around the cylindrical cardboard that comes with gift wrap.

Will this work? Being in zone 5, can I start this project now? And, if this will work how long until the vines are dry enough to use in my display?

I have never worked with grapevines so I have no idea how to go about this and would appreciate any advice.
