2.........500 watt lamps...for 18.88.......from your experience...do you think these would work well for the gessies...you can turn one off or use both.....they are PERFECT for my plumerias...which love heat

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

500 watts ? I'm not sure as I don't know a lot about 500 watts . Maybe too much ? I grow mine like weeds in natural light. ??
Anyone else help >?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

If your plumerias love them, your gessies might also, although AVs do prefer not to be right in bright, direct sunlight. But I'm going to stick with 32 watt florescent tubes, because I can run a lot more of them for the same cost in electricity.... I get in enough trouble with all the wattage I use with my fish tanks!

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Yes I like the 32 - 40 but my gessies are all in natural light :))

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

allison..really...all of yours are natural light?....that is great...

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

I have a question about the lights. Are you all using the plant bulbs, that are more expensive, or do you use cool white or warm white? I know what my succulents like but I'm still so new to the AVs. Any suggestions? I use the 4 ft shop light fixtures from Walmart. I am waiting for DH to get a pay check and then I'm going to go buy some more fixtures and bulbs. So any suggestions are very much appreciated.

jesse..i would go for just the regular flourescent bulbs...although lots of discussions of more expensive grow lights...i think most of us use the regular flourescent bulbs with good success

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I've been using warmer bulbs (not lots more expensive, maybe a dollar a bulb) in my new T-8 fixtures upstairs, and I think blooming has increased, even more than when they went downstairs under my cool light T-12 (the regular fat tubes) fixtures. Kenton pointed out somewhere recently that plants use different wavelengths for different things... cooler wavelengths promote foliage growth, and warmer wavelengths promote or intiate blooming.

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

yep critter think you're right....i don't think the more expensive ...really expensive GROW lights make that much difference though

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

If you don't use grow lights I'd go for cool white they have more of the light Av's use. Their less than $5.00 for two at Lowes or HD. I got my fixtures at HD/Lowes couple years ago for less than $8.00 each. Took a few months to get them all. I got a couple at a time !

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

I bought grow lights and heard mixed reveiws as to whether they are better. I put one regular bulb in there and am curious to see if there is a difference.
I have not put lights on my second wall stand yet though. I am waiting to see if they get enough natural light..it is for my adult plants and it is a bright room. If they dont' bloom well..I will add lights to it.

I never ever think to go into big lots :)
Actually I have NEVER been into a big lots :)
We do have one in town though so I should stop in and see what they have here!

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

Big Lots is one of the greatest stores to shop at. The have lots of merchandise that was not sold in major stores because of too much merchandise. Then they get it and mark it way down. So you get great products at really good prices.

I am a happily chubby chocoholic :)

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

My new year's resolution (I don't like to call it that! ) was to drastically reduce my refined sugar intake. So far i've lost a little weight, but even DH noticed my 'tire' around my middle was decreasing! I such a sugar addict! It's been hard. Dday 25 and so far, I've had a few hot chocolates and a sliver of apple pie, and that's it.

we try and eat one of those nut and twig -tofu type diets, but my one weakness is the sugar! Talk about withdrawals!

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

LOL Laurie..I would rather DIE then give up my chocolate..DIE I tell ya!

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

lorry...you're not chubby...but REFINED sugar is a NO NO....i love chocolate..and i know studies show a piece now and than is actually GOOD for us...but i just can't stop at one...so i try to stay away from it....yikes..
