Ok congrats to me..(happy dancing all over the plant room)
I have EARS! On SEVERAL of my leaves today!!WOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I am such a proud momma right now :)
Looks like at least three of my leaves have ears..Hopefully more will pop soon!
Oh MY GOD! I have ears!!!!
Wonderful, Lorry! (Happy dancing with you!) Congratulations!
When did you put them down?
Erm..to be honest...I don't know! I have put so many down at different times and I just never dated them! I probably should next time though!
I think each leaf depends though.
Conragts !
It's an amazing feeling the first time you see those lil ears, isn't it? :) It hooked me on AV's right then!:)
MsC
LOL..yes it was! I thought I may not get any..it has been taking what seemed like forever! But I have quite a few with tiny ears!
These are the ones I noticed
Ballet Blue ice
orchids bumble magic
grape lollipop..*I don't have this but got some leaves as a gift*
Rob's lilli pilli
and one of my NoIDs
So all in all I am happy
I also have a lot of my suckers finally starting to take root...So I should have a LOT to share!
I was really nervous that they would never root!
Congratulations! Lorry !!!! The excitment never ends :))
Once they start coming they never stop you'll have so many babies :)) What I do ( 90 percent of the time lol) is when I lable my solo cups I also put the date !
I have so many babies now each time I go into my garden room I have things to do transplanting babies ! I love doing so :)) watering, so many times babies sucker and grow fast then I re-pot them and have extra plants. Oh many when I took one of my babies away from Mom for example " Von's Friend Sly" It had more than one baby , Mom died. What I did was pot them all up together in order to keep them strong until they grew larger . Last night I transplanted them to seven plants ! So pretty too variegated beauties.
Growing African violets the sky is the limit when it come to enjoyment ! Congratulations! Congratulations!
Allison
I just looked that up on FC..what a pretty plant!
I agree with you Allison! Seems once they start they seem to really SHOOT up! I have some suckers that are truly doing that now!
I am putting a little grouping together for your also! So will send you a list of what I have and see what ones you need!
I don't have any that need to be moved just yet though!
I did lose the shocking sucker :( But I have leaves of her up so will hopefully have some to share.
On dating! I am going to start putting the dates on the labels so I know who is who :)
I have Von's Christmas Toy also put down leaves ( like 4 months ago) same time as Von's Friend Sly...both have baby leaves but growing much slower. Yes each leaf is different some fast some slow. But seems like when you have a lot of them and they start coming up it never stops you always have babies to transplant. I have fount if I let them get larger couple inches above cup and full they are easy to separate and also grow better on their own than if they were taken from Mom too small.
Like a Premature child. Some where Mom dies I transplant and nuture more some live some don't
I get excited with each new baby !
Allison
I'm happy dancing for you! I decided that if I stop looking and worrying, that's about the time the ears will pop up.
I've only had the experience once, and then I killed it, so I'm anxiously awaiting some little ears too.
I am sure you will get more ears laurie...It is just a matter of time!
Heck I thought some of these would NEVER sprout LOL but they are!
I am going to leave them all right where they are until they look like real little plantlets.
Hey Lorry ,
Enjoy your babies...and don't feel bad about not dating them. The first time I put leaves down they were all NOIDs and I had every single leaf make babies! At the time I really didn't think they would do anything,I thought yeah right (and I'm a seasoned gardener, too)...lol
so I did not label a single thing. Now I just do it as a matter of fact and the peel and stick labels are great, I keep them in my AV grooming box and as soon as I get new ones of any kind a leaf goes down and gets a stciky label of some kind.
Now we won't talk about the clutter all those leaves and new plants make... but I'm not trying for a "house beautiful award" anyway..lol
Enjoy those babies & many more to come!
MsC
LOL MsC I hear ya!
My husband is still teasing my about how quickly my collection is multiplying. I am already running out of room again!
I can ship boxes of babies out and still no extra room..
One cup of mom and leaf turns into pots and pots of babies times hundreds. lol
And I want some room for my large plants and larger Chiritas that are 20 inches plus across..lol I But my babies and leaves get all the light. lol
DH is teasing over here too! He says my playhouse looks like a florists!
Lorry, here's the thread with my one (now dead) baby ears. http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/558256/
It was so cute. Live and learn. hoping for the day when I have ears coming out of my ears!
With as many leaves as I have down, hopefully it will be soon. I do have LOTS of roots! so there's hope!!
edited to add the link - Duh! my brain sometimes...

http://www.robsviolet.com/violets_by_leaf.htm
Might try to do it this weekend...I have 2 lil mini's that i want to try.
Char
Char growing African violets is real easy ! Please check up in our stickys for all the information in the world to help you ! Anyone can grow them don't worry !
And me I live in a tiny single wide one bed room trailer and I can always find room or homes for new African violet babies :))
Have fun ! Allison
Jump in with both feet Char, you'll be hooked like the rest of us!! I think mini's are a little more difficult. but don't give up.
Char,
It's really easy, once you figure out what YOUR growing conditions are & YOUR care habits are.
I'm an "over watering fool" so I have to use very porous soil and self watering pots or a wick system...it saved my violet collection.
Just buy some cheap violets to experiement with and once you have your method down you are on your way.
It can be very addictive but very enjoyable !
Come on join us!
MsC
I jumped in Char, and the water is really quite warm. It is a herculean act of will not to order until spring for me.
Congrats, Lorry; Those plants must love you as much as we do around here.
Kenton
the message is
LET HE/SHE/WHO HAS EARS...
....PLANT MORE LEAVES!!
Awh thanks Kenton. :) You are pretty sweet yourself :)
These are my first ears so I am over the moon :)
Bob if I plant any more leaves..there will be no more room for my husband and the dogs! :)
We have 6 trays up so far!
roflmbbo
LOl but Bob if you want to put more leaves up! I have more plants that can donate to the cause.
You but need ASK *In the words of our famous Kenton :)*
Did I say that? Really?
(But seriously; when was that? My memory's going already.)
Kenton, didn't you say you were a teenager, how in the world is you memory going already?
No kidding, what hope is there for the rest of us at our advanced ages, if you are losing it as a mere stripling?
You said it right here :)
I live near an elementary school with attached park, and need be a bit careful. Little girls are always picking flowers and I'm always running outside to put the fear of God into them and tell them that it is OK to ask, and that I want to GIVE them flowers.
a quote from the great Kenton :)
Ahh, Thanks, Lorry, the pre-senile synapses slap lethargically back together...
Maybe too much Brugmansia tea!
How exciting! My last surviving AV died when I went on a two week vacation last April...It was the baby of one I really loved that died from crown rot...it was just getting to be healthy and beautiful and my DH "forgot" to water it while I was gone. I was really sad to come home and find it all dried up. BUT...when I first put the leaves down...I placed it outside in a shaded location on my porch...and just forgot about it except when I watered my porch plants, and it seemed like overnight it was sprouting ears everywhere...very exciting!
Janet
janet..that is exicting..good for you..bob
LOL..you are too funny Kenton :)
Lorry,
I would love to have some of your leaves to put down...if you have some to spare. I have been looking for AV plants here and the only ones I have seen thus far at HD are really pitiful now....I miss mine with their sweet cheerful goodmorings in the breakfast room window...my friend has been promising to get me some of her sisters Standard size plant's leaves, but nothing so far. Thanks, and let me know...I will be happy to pay postage. If ANYONE has some to spare, let me know...
Janet
I have leaves and mostly baby plants to share for trade or shipping and handling :))
I am going to box up your palms today Jesse.
I am also planning on sending you a box of plantlets and leaves to put up :)
Violet,
Thanks for your offer...you have dmail!
edited to correct typo...;)
