Oh that's a given, I've seen some of your goodies!! I'd love to!

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Well, I'm crossing my fingers for a spring trip to Maas to beef up my old begonia collection a bit for trading with you. Of course I have other plants to trade so if you happen to have any mini begonias that might work in terrarium conditions put a couple aside for me & I'll find something suitable to trade you come spring.

Here's an old pic of one of my begonias....

begonia, That's too cool with the leaflets growing on the leaves. I've never seen that on a begonia before.

Critter, your begonia is beautiful too.

I have a question for you ladies. I have a begonia that was flowering beautifully until a couple of weeks ago. All of a sudden all the flowers fell off and now I see a couple of moldy spots on the leaves. What can I do to save this plant? Is there something that I can give my plants on a regular basis to prevent this mold? I lost some this past summer due to this also.

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

some begonias are prone to powdery mildew, I use neem oil and spray on one week intervals. If your house is cool, make sure you aren't overwatering it. They like to get nearly dry in between waterings, if you have peat in the soil it may be wetter than it looks. If you have a water meter, see what it's reading before you water.

Make sure it has good air circulation too. Butch? what do you think?

Laurie Beautiful ! WOW you have so many awesome plants ! Thanks for sharing :)) Allison

Thanks for the tip bc, Can you spray neem oil on the leaves of rex begonias too? I think my soil is peat based also. Is there any special soil mixture that works best for begonias. I'll gladly repot all of them to get them to look as good as yours and MsC.

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

well, I can't comment for others, but what I have found works best for me is a very light and loose soil blend. I use perlite, sand (yes, as in play sand from HD, a tip from my begonia Guru at the Strybing Arboretum in SFO) and orchid bark mixed with a soil less blend of potting mix. Mine like to have lots of 'air pockets' in the soil that a chunkier mix gives them. I tend to overwater and am having a fungus gnat issue but easing off the water helps along with BT.

I can't remember if I have sprayed neem on my rexies yet because it's usually the 'Frosty', 'Benigo', 'Medora', kind that get the PM. If I recall, I did spray some, but the butter is slipping off the ol' noodle and I just can't remember.

Perhaps someone else can comment. No problems on the canes and rhizos though.

Here's a sweet heart of a begonia called 'Fiji Islands' - a sport of Cathedral. It's great one for small spaces and available at Logees. Mine was a tiny little 2 or 3 inch pot last spring, I've had at least 5 or 6 starts from it and it still looks pretty good.

And speaking of butter slipping off the old noodle, I am almost positive that I read recently that if you sprinkle cinnamon on the soil where you're having gnat problems, it will do away with them. I will try to go find where I read that but it's probably cheap to give it a try.

Really? Hope you find the info. That sure would be an easy, nice smelling solution!

And here's another little sweetie pie name "Conner", some variety of eye-lash begonia.

oh my goodness. The leaflets on B. hispida var cucullifera and 'Magic Carpet' are fascinating. wow.

And here's my struggling little b. 'Mirage', trying so hard to get over the boron in the water I'm guessing. My b. nelumbifolia tip burns too, but not on the new growth, only the old stuff. =(

This one is one of my favorites, 'Cayuga', I love the chartreuse color. And it has the teeniest little white blooms.

And just a few little whiskers on b. dichotoma. This one is like the Jolly Green Giant. I'll try and find the older photo I have of it.

Begonia,

Where the you get your Mirage from?

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Mirage was an eBay purchase I think. But try Kartuz? PHOE? I just can't recall. It struggles. I may try potting it down in the spring. Change the soil blend. Not sure.

Love the whiskers Joolz

What is PHOE? thank you.

I wish we could post multiple pictures in one post but oh well. Here are some pictures from your begonias you traded this summer Laurie.

This is the same tiny 'Orange Sherbet' you sent me. It is now blooming. Thought I was going to lose it because it was so small.

How about serratipetala that I got from a local club member. The fern volunteered as well as the impatien (I wish begonias grew with the reckless abandon as impatiens do).

I got 'Caravan' and 'Northern Lights' recently from Logee's.

Is this 'Cachuma'? Got it from the same local club member.

One more. I got this from the same local club member. It was labeled 'Selby's Trash'. So I wonder if that is really it's name or did someone name Selby throw it in the trash. Either way it is intriguing.

Butch,
They are all beautiful. The 'Selby's Trash' reminds me a little of B. cleopatra.

What is the begonia behind 'Selby's Trash' with the small spotted leaves?

Shirley
