Apple Trees

Bethelridge, KY(Zone 6a)

I've finally decided what variety of apple trees to order. I ordered these today from Johnson Nursery in GA:

Liberty
Honeycrisp
Arkansas Black
Dolgo Crabapple

All are semi-dwarf trees, now I've got to start digging the holes. They should be here next Wenesday or Thursday.

Now I've got to decide what to get for peach trees (2). Any suggestions?

What type of peach do you like?. I love the white fleshed types. Belle of Georgia and Carolina Belle have done well for me. Yellow fleshed types I prefer the softer ones, so Redskin is my favorite. But Red Haven is the most popular fresh market peach in this area and very good.

Hi Farmer!

I guess I'd prefer a yellow fleshed one, never tried a white flesh. The most popular peach in the north seemed to be Elberta. Don't know how well they'd do in this area though.

Redhaven was one of the ones that I was considering as well as Intrepid and Reliance. We bought 3 bushels of Redhaven to can last fall and they were very good.

Thanks for your help.

Elberta was the most popular commercial peach in western Virginia, when I was a kid so it should do equally well in Kentucky. Time has passed it by for commercial use, but it is a decent peach. Does tend tend to get bitter pit when age hits the tree. It was replaced by an improved version some 20 -30 years ago called the Jones, but the last time I was in a Virginia peach orchard, they were growing Rio Oso gem and the Va Tech Presidential series, which I did not care much for. Hard shipping peaches. Bounced when they hit the ground.

I got my apple trees yesterday by UPS, got them in the ground this morning. Nice looking, sturdy trees except the Dolgo Crab. This one is just a whip. All in all though, I'm pleased.

Just a little nervous, I've never planted trees in January before!

Big Red,

If I was doing it over I would have planted a Honeycrisp instead of a Jonagold three years ago.

Also I think that Sundance and Pixie Crunch [new ones] are interesting along with Sweet Sixteen. Still I got more trees than I need already. My Red Delicious is surely a nice keeper...it is sweeter than it was last falll...very crisp and tasty.

Hi Indy!

I almost got 2 Honeycrisps after reading all the raves. The Delicious apples are not my favorites, I would like to get a Stayman Winesap though.

I just recently ran across the neatest site about apple trees, you might want to check it out, especially the write up on the Bessie Lund apple. ☺

Hi Big Red.

I have a Winesap. It is ok, but the one I got is more mealy than most other kinds.
I've got Jon-a-red, Gala, a couple others, Golden Delicious, and Red Delicious. At this time of year on my home raised ones, only RD is very good and mine is great. Mine isn't so dark red or so pointed [Washington] as many are, and it is better than the Michigan ones.
